It would be handier to put up the complete uncropped image to get an idea of scale.

Link to the original image... I am trying to figure out the year approximately for the local studies dept of Swindon Libraries. I try to help sometimes by finding out which cars are in the image, giving a rough time range that the photo was taken. I recognise the light unit, but can't figure out the car. As you can see in the link, that is all that is shown of the car. Loving the funny responses, but this isn't a wind up. I thought I would see if PH could figure it out.

Would it not be easier to date the burglar alarm box and the B&H advertising...?

FWIW, the alarm box is still there, even if the shop front has gone: http://goo.gl/maps/zeDHZ

There's a rear light cluster, with -

Orange
Red

At the very least, it would need to be an Elan rolled onto its side.

Ah looking at the world's smallest image on my phone I assumed the top and bottom was the cars bodywork with the lights being a horizontal strip through the middle.....

Good point, well made, but I'm still not totally convinced.

I'd be pretty confident that is the right one, If I had a cigar, I'd give one to that man.

Out of all those posted I went for the GS until thegreenhell's image. Now I'm 99% sure it is a Renault 11.

Great work.
