I'm biased but I'd take a Clio 182 over either of those options.

Cheap as chips. Buy one thats had the cambelt done by a specialist and you're set. Easy to work on too.
Done an aux belt on one?

The very worst thing about the 172/182's is how bloody difficult they are to work on and how inaccessible everything is. I wouldn't say don't buy one but be prepared to skin knuckles and lose blood or pay a "specialist" when something breaks.

Good suggestions. The BMWs are completely off limits, Even an M3 apparently. A leon, as good a car is it is, is what her ex used to have so that's a no as well!

OP's looking at significantly smaller cars, but yes, 2K buys a very good Aero indeed. In fact, it'd buy mine, now I come to think of it, and it's not even for sale!

Quite fancy replacing my OH's Focus with a 9-5 Aero estate, let me know if you decide to sell.

Am I the only person who considers running costs when answering questions like these?

I may be off the mark here, but imo, someone in the market for a 1500-2000 quid car isn't going to want the associated running costs of an S-Type Jag, or even a RenultSport Clio - given the amount of commentary from owners complaining that the entire car is basically a consumable item!

95 Aero would be my choice.

He's already stated 'not that fussed about fuel consumption', which to me opens up a world of larger engined cars.

Fuel consumption isn't the only factor in running costs - reliability and cost of parts need to be taken account of as well.

Parts for an S-Type Jag aren't going to be cheap.

Maintainence costs are a factor and servicing and driving a big Jag at the age of 29 isn't something i'd relish! The Saabs do like a hell of a lot of car for the money, again though, my other half is 27 and I think the Saab would be a bit too grown up.

Perhaps until you gave your Noobtuned (Google's your friend) 9-5 a boot and felt the mid range urge - she might change her mind then smile

A Mitsubishi galant/legnum vr4 would also meet your requirements if you wish to stray from the more usual suspects. A lot of car for the money but never feel quite as fast as you think they should! also should mention the usual Subaru Impreza too although I'm not that hot on them.

These questions always turn into some sort of st half witted logic puzzle/guessing game. You get a massively open ended set of requirements then a set of absurd reasons why entire swathes of the possible suggestions are out of the question.

If it mustn't include cars with more than 6 hoses under the bonnet, or saloons, or ones with more than a 45 profile tyre, or anything that your girlfriend has had sex in the back of before etc. etc. then either say upfront or just tell us what the car is that you're presumably trying to steer us towards suggesting and thus validating the choice you've already made!

Another vote for the Saabs - and she might change her mind when she finds out how bloody comfortable they are!

Fair enough, I guess I thought by mentioning the Golf and 147 I was trying to show the type of car we were looking at. ie, hatchback, smallish, 150 Bhp.

The Cupra and the Clio fit this bill. The 328 would be perfect if not for her having an irrational fear of long cars. That merc compact looks interesting though. Cheers for the suggestions guys

Always interesting how cars are perceived - the E36 328 is only 3 inches longer than the Merc Compact.

Still, she did stipulate no BMWs so the Merc may be the car for her

Good luck
