they have stopped checking insurance details entirely
it's now only in northern Ireland that insurance is required before a vehicle can be taxed
Did it change a while ago?

We're getting a new car 2nd Sept and the dealer tells me the tax disc will arrive in the post to our house - indeed I spoke to them yesterday and they were a bit surprised we hadn't already had it and the V5. In the past I've always had to send or take an insurance certificate so the dealer could tax a new car, but the (very young) salesman seemed baffled by that.

Do you have a source for that?

Last time I renewed a car's tax, the online system said it would check for valid insurance as part of my application - more recently (begining of this year), a friend couldn't tax his car online because his insurance check 'failed'. I also know part-time dealers who avoid the online system for that reason!

Given that insurance is legally required for all non-SORN cars - I find it hard to believe they aren't checking for insurance when tax is renewed?

Note: Most dealers selling new cars tax those through a special scheme which enables them (rather than the prospective owner) to do it and I assume that doesn't check for insurance because it's kinda impractical?

In December 2013 they changed it such that insurance checking no longer occurs. This is referenced earlier in this thread and I think was part of the transition to the new system. It is explained by anpr being the dominate mechanism by which insurance is checked and also solves the problem of insurance running out on the same day as tax which others have mentioned as well.

I've always said the Govt works in mysterious ways but they really are "on one" here - thanks for that!
