£30 annual tax divided by 12 months... £2.50.

Nah, couldn't give a flying fk to be honest.

Do they pay you back as well if you have say 6 whole months left? (If you bought 12 up front). Just seems like an extra layer of work sending money back for someone else to pay it again. Just transfer the whole remainder as we do now, but without tax discs. Simple rigt!? Why have they made it more complicated?

You can only claim back the remaining full months under the current system.
I don't see what the fuss is about.

Im sure some people shouldn't be allowed to own a car with the crap they come out with to do with the new tax rules. Also the tv isn't exactly making it any better saying you be fined for not signing up to the dvla that just bullst.

If people cant understand the new rules and work around them ie selling or buying a car at the end of the month so you don't lose a months refund etc or just run the car out of tax then sorn the car then sell it.

Very simple yet some people cant grasp this.

I bought a new disc on the 21/8. I was told at the post office that the disc would date from 1/8. So I lose 20days. Wtf.

Robbing wkers. Do the DVLA managers get bonuses?

When the V5 is handed over, or more correctly when the change of keeper is processed. You'll (if the system works, knowing Britain and the DVLA it probably won't) get your money back. The new owner has to tax it on the day of purchase, as I've understood it. Notwithstanding the robbery indeed of a month if you sell on the 2nd, for example.

Sweden ditched their tax decals in 2010 if memory serves. Same robbery applies here. Considerable knicker-wetting in the UK over something the Swedes took in their stride, it surprised me a little but then again didn't really.

Signed.

DVLA was bad enough before, but at least with the regional offices you had some recourse when things went wrong.

In this day and age there is NO, again NO reason that they can't refund every penny to the day!

But why force the refund at all??? Just allow us to bloody sell the car with tax.

I don't understand why they've gone for the new system.

Those who don't have insurance can't get road tax. It was obvious that they might not be insured when the car had an out of date tax disc. The tax disc was the first give away.

The government have apparently been trying to discourage big dirty cars. The new system will make more people capable of paying for dirtier cars.

Loads of people seem to be happy paying £500 per month finance, but not £500 per year on road tax in one payment. Now that you can pay monthly that will make it more attractive to those who live life month to month.

Not really bothered about the refund of road tax. Unless you own big engined cars and change cars frequently, the actually cost will be small.

It was always the case you could only get refunds for whole months.

If no road tax is passed on, the new buyer will have to prove online that he has insurance.

My only issue is how they are going to detect who has tax on the road. How many people will have the facilities to detect and catch the dodgers?

Stupid that they should be allowed to receive 2 lots of tax for the same vehicle, even for a month.

You haven't needed to provide proof of insurance to tax a vehicle for a while...

Because under the new scheme there will be scenarios were the VED for a given month is paid twice.

This is because the DVLA will only refund to the last full month and the new buyer will have to tax from the 1st of the month they buy the car in, which yes is the same as it is now, but you can currently sell a car with tax on which is what most people do as it's a selling point, whereas you won't be able to in the future.

I don't see why the change is necessary, but equally I'm not sure why it's such a big deal. It'd be nice to have a full refund of every day outstanding on what you've paid already, but there we go - Government in Steals Money Shock.

The system for taxing a 'new' car seems simple enough - it's just a change and people don't like change. It might have been more effectively communicated, though.

Till now, if you've seen a vehicle in the street and it's disk is valid, it's a fair assumption that the car is legal in respect of MOT and insurance... From 1st Oct, this will no longer be the case.

I wonder how long someone could get away with not having any of those things before being tagged by a ANPR, a speed camera or a cop?.. My bet is some will (Over and above those that already do) test that, and round here in Somerset, I recon they could get away with it for quite a while.

I suspect that as time goes by you won't be able to enter a Tescos car park, sit at a set of lights, or sneeze in the street without being pinged by an ANPR.
