Ah the one that got away...

There was a Formula Ford in someones front garden near to where I previously lived, it was wrapped in tarpaulin and slowly disappearing under a bramble hedge, I would have it eventually but I didnt have the cash or the guts to buy it, bits of it were visible and it was on road tyres, had twin carbs on a kent or pinto block and would have needed a fair bit of money thrown at it to get it trackworthy, bushes, pipes etc. I kept thinking it would be nice to have but was too scared that I'd never have the cash to get it prep'd and it would be a money pit, after 5 years of watching the bramble take over I eventually went to make an offer last month but it was gone frown
You had a lucky escape I suspect.

I know where there is a 'as last raced' early Tuscan for sale. Conservative estimate is that it would cost the same again to get running again as it would to pay the price the owner wants. And that's before you start trying to track down the 'right' parts.

in the late 80's and early 90's I was really into the aircooled VW scene. I had two vw beetles, quite tastefully modded, that also were show winning cars at varying events that people regularly wanted to buy from me.

needless to say, when they went up for sale- in the back of Volksworld eventually, they sold to the first caller.

I then had a 72 vw bay camper- but I stripped it to a shell, lowered it, performance engine, fantastic new interior, porsche wheels and discs- again a show winning van- you have to remember this was about 1990- when they typically were just on the road painted in orange/blue white and weren't really customised etc much. this was in a nice metallic burgandy and just looked "right".

I owned it a good 10 years and endlessly had people wanting to buy it- got to be a pain- you'd be camping, cooking, relaxing and someone would be banging on yr door, wanting a chat and trying to do a deal ! again I sold it on first advert in about 2004 to the first caller- it was just that good a sorted and restored camper.
