What Aston Martin should have built instead of the Cygnet
Discussion
IFIRC the Cygnet was because all EU car manufacturers have to produce a low emissions car. As Aston Martin do not currenty have a fully developed Hybrid system I think this was the deal.
I still don't understand how Lamborghini/Ferrari get away with it but it may be down to number of units produced.
I have seen several Cygnets about and intact one that was free with the order for the One77.

Well I don't know about Lamborghini, but Ferrari do have a hybrid drive train in the La Ferrari don't they?I still don't understand how Lamborghini/Ferrari get away with it but it may be down to number of units produced.

Also, are they able to count their average CO2 as part of the VW/Fiat group respectively?? not sure how it works...

"Thirdly, we need to bring the company’s fleet carbon emissions down. The Cygnet is perfect for that. This is just a small, stylish and efficient runabout: it doesn’t need batteries or flywheels to be that way. So it’s not pretending to be something it’s not.”

I think it is because of the numbers built. As far as I know the LaFerrari won’t run on electrical power only, wikipedia says the correct definition for such a car is "mild hybrid". Total emissions are around 330g/km as opposed to the 918 with 79g/km and 3.3l/100km. Of course in reality a 918 will consume around 15-20l/100km but for now its all about tricking the relatively pointless new european driving cycle.

My point wasn't why but what Aston should build as a low cost car and I think the MINI Superleggera looks very Aston Martin. Deep down I think that MINI hasn't done great things for the brand in the last two new generations of the BMW ownership. But this one I like. Maybe my view will change after I've seen it at Salon Prive.

Always thought it was an urban myth that Aston built the Cygnet to reduce its CO2 average, since as the original base car was an IQ, then when Aston bought this car, it just counted on Toyotas average ? Might be wrong on that.
Oh and as for the car Aston Martin should have built, a straight six roadster at below £50,000 to compete just above the Boxster.
