I'm looking at getting my first car, hopefully within the next few weeks, and I'm not too sure what to get. I'm 18 and have been passed for 6months. I need something with cheap insurance (obviously), any ideas? Sorry I forgot to say with a max budget of around £1800

Volkswagen Fox, cheap to insure and surprisingly spacious, same size as a polo.

Ford Ka. cheap, undesirable but good fun once up to speed and cheap to run. Whenever I thrashed mine I used to get 40mpg everywhere. Keep an eye out for rust on the doors and around the fuel filler cap.

Look at stuff that new drivers typically wouldn't be driving around in, the insurance tends to be cheaper as they perceive it as less risk

Alternatively, anything that qualifies as a classic car can be insured cheaply but may cost a lot to run.

I Acehood has a valid point, check out cars that young guys don't regularly drive and you may be a little suprised.

I know when I passed my test a couple of years ago, most classic car policies wouldn't cover my age group (can't remember if it was over 21 or 25) but it could be worth a little look.

Original Minis and VW Beetles are meant to be pretty cheap (hearsay rather than experience)

My first car was an MGB. Fabulous thing compared to the crappy little euro-boxes most of my friends were driving around it. smile

Sadly, I think classic insurance policies for under 21s are harder to obtain these days.

I believe base spec Ford Ka's are one of the cheapest to insure. But they're ugly girls cars and rust buckets (which is probably why they're so cheap).
I'd go for a Aygo, Fox or Polo personally.

Mk3 Fiat Panda? I think the 1.1 is insurance group 1 and it's hardly ever bought by young drivers. Even the 1.2, which is far more readily available, should still be pretty cheap to insure.

You should easily be able to pick one up for £1800.

Have a look at odd cars for an 18 year old, such as estates and people carriers. They can often be very cheap on insurance.
