Picking up brand new Suzuki Swift Sport on Saturday for SWMBO. I have never purchased new before or from a main dealer.
They offered her full tank and 4 mats for £99 which she declined.
As a result they have said the car is on the low fuel light and will remain that way.

To me, given we're purchasing brand new, it seems a real pisstake.

Any experienced people care to enlighten me??

When I bought my motorbike brand new It had hardly any fuel in it at all, the needle didn't move. I just went and filled it. It depends on how much the mats were separately to get some context.

If you didn't negotiate this as part of the agreement, you won't get it.

Why should you?

Full tank £50, set of half decent mats £30. I'd say you were right to decline their offer. Just head to the nearest petrol station as soon as you're done.

It would be nice for them to stick £10 in, but it's money down the drain to them if they do.

I think this discussion has been had on here before?

£20/£40/Full tank of fuel times X number of cars = £LOTS.

The same with mats @ £30 a set.

They're a business.

Also, I assume you got the 'vat free' deal which means the dealer is hardly making anything on the car.

Some manufacturers state that the 'On the Road' price includes a full tank of fuel.

However, it appears that Suzuki do not.

Suzuki website said:
Suzuki has a standard ‘On the Road’ price on all vehicles. This charge includes delivery to Dealer, number plates, first year’s Vehicle Excise Duty and first registration fee.
Down to you to negotiate it.

Having the low fuel light on is a pisstake and this should not happen in a professional dealership. All new cars are delivered with the barest minimum of fuel to get them off the trailer.

The dealer will then try to sell you £55 worth of fuel and a £15 mat set for £99.

But the salesman should put £5 of fuel into it for you to get the fuel light off as part of his pre delivery prep. It is their job to make the handover experience as pleasant as possible for you. It won't be very pleasant if you are getting stressed that your new car will run out of fuel before you can get to a filling station.

There will very likely be a checklist that they will ask you to fill in with questions on the handover, the experience and how happy you are with the dealership. This goes back to the manufacturer. If they refuse to put fuel in it for you then explain this in the checklist comments section.

Or refuse to accept the car with the fuel light on, and be very vocal and loud about when you're in the showroom. Stand up and go to walk out, etc.

If the salesman doesn't get a fully satisfied customer with a 100% checklist, it will hit him in his pocket.

Turn up with one of those 5 litre green petrol cannisters and at least it gives you some range to find a petrol station.

It does seem 'cheap' but every car I've ever bought from a dealer has been on fumes. They're a business, out to make money.. and I'm sure 20 quid of fuel on every car they sell would soon add up.

+1. Normally a standard thing to negotiate. If you don't like the minimum deal they'd make, go elsewhere.

Do not expect any dealer to provide anything that you have not negotiated! The "and a full tank of fuel" is usually the last bit of the negotiation before signing on the dotted line. Most dealers will go for it, some may haggle to half a tank etc. but you are still up on the deal. Even if they don't, you've still not lost anything!

If you want the fuel/mats/flowers/chocolates treatment you need to be spending big bucks on high end cars where the profit margins are substantial and, even then, it's not guaranteed.

Learning point for next time perhaps.

i'm a sad act, just looked it up! 42 litres @ £1.30/litre = £55 which leaves £45 for some (presumably decent) branded mats custom made for the car.

They're not getting rich off you, it's barely worth the bother of seeking out a petrol station for the fiver or so premium you are paying!!

To answer your OP question, no, they are not taking the michael!

I'm also a sad act, Swift Sport mats (specific to the sport, with sport embroidered on them) are listed @ £65.23+ VAT so you actually got offered a good deal wink

This does rather assume that the mats aren't £15 eBay specials.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I think it's poor service and leaves a bad taste personally but clearly I'm expecting too much!!
