I like that, maybe with the exception of the wheels, but I wouldn't use it for every occasion!

I think the whole thread is a bit tongue in cheek and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

I'm not overly bent out of shape about this - I'd buy something grey if I was afraid of being judged smile

It's my wife's daily driver. She wanted an XKR-S but it's smaller in the back than our Cerbera is so it wouldn't have made for a useable family car with shopping, a buggy and two kids to inject in to the rear seats whilst pouring with rain in a supermarket carpark. It's also the car we use for long distances as her parents live 700 miles away. That knobmobile above was the most fun way of 'settling' for another saloon instead of a coupe. It's a riot to drive but when you don't look in the mirrors and see blue paint it's easy to forget how daft it looks when driving along normally.

I've got a white A3 tdi on lease, it made sense as I was spending a fortune on petrol doing 10k miles a year.
Not sure if serious?

I would love to know how when doing less than average miles per year you could SAVE money by leasing an Audi, unless you were driving a V8 before or something..... Doesn't an A3 cost at least 10k to lease over 3 yrs, that's a lot of petrol!

I love it when people purchase things they want and justify it to themselves with bizarre facts that don't add up.

On the topic of class, its probably classier not to own a car at all....

I bought a Jag XF. In bright blue with a big spoiler and carbon fibre tat stuck all over it. Worse still - I specifically wanted bright blue and the big spoiler! Utterly classless and a nice, sensible Jag ruined - I'm sure everyone will agree. Why on earth I didn't want Stratus Grey and the spoiler delete option will be a mystery to many I am certain. Then again, I'm not retired and don't like having to read numberplates in a carpark to work out which is my car.

I LOVE the colour! I think fast, slightly exotic cars look great in garish, bright colours. Certainly more interesting to my eyes than the sea of 'exec grey' most are now...

Ever heard of depreciation or opportunity cost ?

Or of course you could always drive some old snotter........... wink
Depreciation or opportunity cost wasn't the point - The point is that leasing an Audi A3 driving than average mileage in order to save money is difficult to understand.

As above - why use lame excuses and not just say "I bought an audi A3 diesel because I wanted one and it makes me ooooooze class and I will look really sexy/successful/trendy in it.

As for the 'snotter' comment a 10k car is hardly a snotter now is it?

I do believe sir that you have just shown more class than most on this thread, certainly more integrity. I salute you and your car. True class is not giving a flying fk what other people think....anything else is just the simpering of fkwits.

So many desperately unhappy people on this thread. Very sad reflection of PH in my mind.

I don't even own a car at the minute, but I imagine all those white Audi drivers are at least happy with their choice, and care not one jot what the nay sayers here bought. Which hands them the win, in my book.

See 2008 for details. When interest rates get back to sensible levels expect more people to see what the problem is and your ratio of all-bar-one to adjust accordingly.

I agree, but we are in the era of cheap money so why does that denote the class of person by taking advantage of that?

Really? How is that less classy than any other base spec small hatch? I don't understand the contempt for base spec models. You're getting all the engineering, safety and quality of the more expensive models in the range for the lowest price and to be honest, it has probably got everything most of us need: remote locking, electric windows, power steering, CD player, AC etc. It will still hold its value well and probably lose less money than more expensive models in the range. Isn't a GT TDI with bling wheels less classy? The only thing I read was that the 1.2 TSI and 1.6 TDI only have twist beam rear suspension compared to multi-link rear suspension on all other versions, which seems weird! We decided to go this way when we bought my wife's Fiat 500. We could have spent more and got a Lounge or Sport model which both looked good and boasted a few more features or even got the more powerful 1.4 litre engine but this seemed too far away from the cheap, economical yet stylish ethos of the original and more towards fashion accessory to me! We went with a 1.2 Pop, which to be fair had about all the things that you could reasonably want as standard (apart from AC maybe) and with a couple of (cheap) options added managed to get rid of the one or two items that felt a bit cheap on the "base" model, namely the plastic steering wheel and the black plastic door mirrors!

Same with Audi/Mercedes/BMW. It shows some class to show some restraint with the options list and not tick the mandatory S-line/AMG/M Sport, leather and auto options. A genuine "base" spec car is probably quite a rare thing! I understand why people buy S-line/AMG/M Sport diesels though, they do look pretty good (and I still remember the time when you had to buy the top of the range model to get a car that looked good out of the factory)! smile

I quite like that too (although it is not in the least bit classy) but who cares? Jags can come across as a bit conservative and old mannish (especially the XF), so this colour offsets that image nicely (I would have an XKR-S in this colour too)! Do many people really know what constitutes classy anyway? If I tried to spec up a car in a "classy" spec, it would probably be overly conservative and look the same as everyone elses, in which case it wouldn't really be classy! It just needs to be something that's a little bit different that "works", yet no too garish.

Personally, I quite like something a bit different that I can find in the car park too. I prefer metallic blues, reds or greens to black/grey/silver/white and a ligter interior (light grey or beige). In fact, probably my favourite company car when I sold VWs was a dark metallic blue mk5 Golf with beige leather interior. I really liked it but some others thought it was horrid and would rather have black/silver/grey with black interior, which I just find dull!

It's funny, this British obsession with class. I didn't realise it before I moved away from Britain. Where I live now, people still like their vehicles and a bit of luxury (leather seats etc) but don't give a stuff about the badge. Hyundai/Kia/Toyota/Honda are much more popular than Audi/BMW/Mercedes but some people still buy them (but don't look down at everyone else). In fact, I might get an Audi next, simply because I've never owned one before and they're quite a rare sight here!

I think that Jag looks revolting. But hey my opinion doesn't matter, I'm not the one paying for it or driving it smile

If you'd went the same route / style of mods with a Corsa I bet everyone would be slating you though.

Does it really? There's obviously no middle ground then. What spec is acceptable? Only a full-blown AMG/M-car/RS Audi or do I just have to have a Mondeo instead? I would probably prefer the Audi/BMW/Mercedes equivalent instead to be honest.

In some ways I'm glad I don't live in the UK any more because I can buy a brand new "base spec" Mk7 Golf 5dr here in Canada with a 1.8 turbo petrol engine (same as the one in the A3 I think) and it comes with alloy wheels, cruise control, air conditioning, heated seats etc for the same price as a new Polo in the UK and people won't judge me and think I'm a pleb for only being able to afford just more than base!

What an obsession you (majority) Brits have with class and knocking Audi's and BMW's.

Is it because a lot of middle class PH people live in 'Same As' Housing Estates like this:

And this

And so cars and what you drive is the only way to differentiate yourself?

I am truly curious why the majority of you jump to slag off others who buy decent brands. It really is a friggin awful UK trait this Tall Poppy Syndrome.

In reality it's disposable Kia's, Chevy's and the like that are classless, not an Audi yet I don't see any of these brands mentioned.

Who cares if a yummy mummy has an Q7, i'd probably like to bone her as would you. Yet on here you'll all slag her off.

I just don't get it. But there again, perhaps that's because I am beneath you all, being Australian and all.....

You maybe right, but those pictures are a bad example, no car 'keeping up with the joneses' on those new build estates.

I concur with you though, I don't get the car snobbery badge bit, I currently have an Audi S5 in the stable, not bought for the badge, but leased (which in PH terms makes me even more classless!) because it was less than £375 per month inc VAT and at the time I thought it might be a 'fun' drive. It's actually one of the most boring cars I've 'owned'. I certainly won't be getting an Audi again.

I'm a bit like you, you can take the boy out the council estate, but you'll never take the council out of the boy. I definitely think I have an inner chav just desperately wanting to come out.

Anyway, good on you for that motor, I wouldn't have the balls to drive something that lairy, but do appreciate it though, and it's great that there are people like you out there that brighten the day up for the rest of us.
