I am getting a new next week but selling my current car privately. My current insurance company won't provide temporary cover for BMWs so I need to find short term cover for my old car whilst I sell it privately.

Can anyone recommend a company to use for this?

There seem to be so many but if anyone has had a good experience with one I'd like to hear.

Cheers

I have used tempcover twice now and recommend them! Very easy to use, all documents are sent to you and they are quite reasonable. (I have no affiliation)

I almost had this issue a couple of weeks ago but things worked out in the end as my mate bought the car off me. A-plan would have insured it on a weekly basis but at a cost of about £28.00 per week (on a £6000.00 Rav 4). HTH !!

I found it easier to insure for a year but pay monthly. I was able to cancel after a month with no penalty . Was far cheaper than short term cover ...

I had the same problem earlier this year.

RAC Insurance wouldn't cover both cars for even half an hour!

I went to the local A Plan office; they got me a policy for the new car that was cheaper than RAC were quoting, and they got a full NCD on the new policy on the understanding that I would cancel the policy with RAC on the car I was selling within a month. I sold it with 3/4 days to spare.

You may be able to get a similar arrangement with a proper broker, but I the internet / offshore call centres will be about as useful as a chocolate teapot!

+ 1 for TempCover

I've used them twice now, both times to buy a car. First when I was 17, second time I was 18. Prices ranged from £36 a day for a 1.8 Corsa, and when I was 17 it was £42.

No hassle at all, easy to get a quotes, documents sent via E-MAIL within minutes. Absolutely great if you need to insure a car quickly after buying it!

I have been wondering the same regarding short term cover. I was hoping to insure a second car for around 2 weeks so the normal short term places would be quite expensive

My insurer will only do a week for around £35 onto my current policy. I can get an annual policy for around £300.

Is my best option to just take out a year policy and cancel on day 13 during the cooling off period?

Just be careful of taking this route. I was actually recommended by insurer to go for a full policy and cancel it rather than taking out short term insurance. And when I came to cancel it a month later (as I expected I would be) they stung me for something like 40% of the premium that I'd paid.

Amused I was not. But just a timely reminder that insurers are out to rob you at any opportunity. Be sure you check exactly what, if any, cancellation fees there will be.
