RE: BAC Mono vs McLaren P1: Time For Tea?
Discussion
I was at the trackday and am disappointed I did not appear in the video!
The P1 was a stunning car and on the straights disappeared in way that hardly seemed credible. However in the corners it only slowly pulled away from my car (tracked modified BMW 130i). I have a fantastic memory of the P1 coming through Farm curve about 30cm from my left wing mirror doing warp speed in a blaze of orange and heat haze.
The only yellow flag I saw on the day was for the P1 stranded in the pit lane entrance, I think it had run out of fuel.
Wish I had seen the Mono being driven by Oli. There was a pair at the day being driven very sedately, I think it was some sort of corporate gig or rental event.

The P1 has a clear power advantage, but the BAC totally owns it in the corners.
Oh come on. Its obvious that the p1 is not trying or the driver is incompetent (which I believe is not the case)Not saying the mono would not out corner it but that video only show the acceleration advantage
Remember ultimately the P1 is a road car. Whilst it is undoubtedly very quick, the 600kg downforce and 2.5G cornering load are peak figures. Very impressive peak figures that are far greater than any other realistically practical road car, however, remember that even something as antiquated as a Caterham can pull 1.9G peak lateral G.
Whilst Mr Bailey probably was not in 'Race' mode or indeed trying as hard as he possibly could, the huge difference in corner speed is unlikely to be inverted. The Mono is an incredibly specialised trackday focused single seater, and I'd frankly be staggered if ANY genuine road car could out corner it on proper (read PZero's or Pilot Sport 3s etc.) road tyres.
This doesn't take anything away from the P1, but let's not get carried away in to thinking it can corner anywhere near as hard as any dedicated trackday or race car.

The racing lines of the p1 driver are very bad and he is supposedly a decent driver. I think he's driving crap in the corners on purpose to do a little posing for the camera? It's obvious to me he's not even trying.
They're not bad. His line in to the Village Complex is correct (which I assume is what your referring to in particular) despite looking odd. The inside half of the corner is cambered in to the apex, with the middle to outside cambered away from it. If you take a traditional wide entry you miss the positively cambered section and wash wide. The reason for the Mono driver taking the wider lines in the slower corners is to try and get a cut back on the McLaren and the camera perspective seems to exaggerate this.Have a look at Lewis Hamilton's pole lap from 2013 here. Both slow complexes have a much shallower turn in than you would traditionally take.

Are you deluded enough to believe the P1 was actually going for it?RacerMike said:

What he said! The Mono is SO good on the brakes, and has plenty of downforce compared to its weight for the corners. There's no way a P1 could keep up, I'm afraid, even if it was trying properly. Overall the lap time might be quicker in the P1 at a fast track like this, but that's only down to the monumental difference in top speed; cornering speeds in the Mono will be significantly higher.

My point is that I fail to understand why ludicrously expensive cars like the P 1 get so much attention for their performance and generate such feverish excitement when many cheap racing cars are in a different league and , come to that , many road legal cars at Santa Pod would leave it for dust in acceleration. Hardly anybody buys these daft hypercars and most of them use them to ponce around Kensington. Good to see somebody at least using a P1 in anger.

Or he could be backing up the ascertation that the P1 wasn't going for it in the corners, possibly due to the afore mentioned tyre issue.
This. I got the impression that both the P1 and Monos were chilling for much of the day. I would be too in my million pound super car and an exceedingly fast track. About mid afternoon I did see a new set of wheels and tyres being wheeled out to the P1 so I assume it doesn't go easy on the consumables. However, when it was lit the thing was from a different planet. The only other things I have seen pull away from me on track at a similar rate are a 911 GT3 Cup car, GT3 458 Italia and a bonkers Nisa GT-R with like 800 Bhp.
As I said it was a shame I didn't get to see the Monos being driven full tilt, again they were quite chilled when ever I was going round.
