Well I've got no further, after previously taking about 10 days before not starting its now instantaneous - it'll only start with a jump, even in an off and on scenario, however after sitting idle for 2 weeks there is still charge (security light still flashes).

An I right to think that it's just a duff battery?

Has anybody tried the simple step of connecting an ammeter in the battery lead to measure how much current is being drawn whilst the car is locked?

That surely would be the place to start.

Remove either (+) or (-) from battery - bridge with an ammeter connected on a 10amp range - do not attempt to start car.

See how much current is being drawn when unlocked / locked.

If current draw is excessive, then begin a process of elimination.

Wasn't there a problem with the E39 that something in the blower circuit would drain the battery?
