Morning all

A chap I know through social media - wants to plan a drive down from Cherbourg to Genoa - he wants to get a cruise from there - so needs to park his car down there while he goes

to quote him exactly

"I have to drive from Cherbourg (France) to Genoa (Italy). Does anyone have any experience of such an adventure? Looks like a hotel half way is a basic requirement etc. but is it a toll hell too (France usually is)...

Then, in Genoa I need parking (Going on a cruise) so if anyone knows the "right place" etc. do tell... thanks"

Has anyone ever done such a journey - I don't know the route personally - but would have thought youd need 2 overnights not 1.

All tips very greatfully received - and I realise that obviously the other option is to fly but I guess this is the way he wants to work it

Thank you guys

TBH, if I was going to Italy, I wouldn't want to start from Cherbourg!

But, if that's the criteria, I would suggest two stops; somewhere around Montlucon, and another somewhere like Chamonix perhaps. We drove down to the Mille Miglia last year doing something very similar and it was an excellent holiday.

We drove from Calais to near Genoa, had a pleasant stop off at Montreux to break the journey.

Thanks for the replies - much appreciated.

Probably should have mentioned it at the start - apologies - but hes from Ireland - so Cherbourg may have been chosen due to ferry crossing direct between Ireland and France.

I did wonder if doing it with just one overnight stop would be ambitious - but not knowing the route overlooked it when he mentioned it

Thanks again guys

It's only a 12 hour run from Cherbourg. One long run, or overnight in somewhere nice like Annecy (slight diversion) or Cormayeur once the majority of the journey has been done.

12 hours road time, which can easily run into 14-16 hours journey time with piss-stops, petrol stops, meal breaks and roadworks.

It's France. Easy to make the Google maps time. I'm happy doing 700+miles in a run in France but that's me.

Anyhow, I did suggest a break in my next sentence in two nice places.
