It's not really mid engined is it? The DS has just got a long bonnet, the engine still sits just behind the front wheels.

One definition of 'mid engined' is 'with the engine between the axles' so in that sense it is.

In that picture it looks like the whole engine sits just behind the front axle line.

I'd consider the Citroën mid-engined in the technical sense, as it sits in between the axles. Front-mid-engined rather than the more common rear-mid layout.

Can't think of any other examples, although I'm sure I recall reading, a few years ago, about a particular RWD car whose engine was deliberately positioned behind the front axle line to improve its balance and handling.

Also the first generation Renault 5.

On both the MKIII MX-5 and the RX-8 the engine sits behind the line of the front axle - not sure I'd call either mid engined though.

You appear to have missed the point of this thread. It's about front-wheel-drive cars.

No, YOU appear to have not read the post I'd quoted - but don't worry, I've made it simple and highlighted what I was answering.

Beaten to it. My old 5 Gordini had this layout, made possible by the gearbox being in front of the engine. (Longitudinal layout, remember.)

seems to be a french thing so far but I'm surprised its not more common. it means you can have a wheel in each corner for better handling, longitudinal engine layout for ease of maintenance and still retain the interior space benefits a traditional fwd offers.

MX5?

At last, a thread where the only sensible answer isn't MX5.

Well, there's plenty of RWD cars where the engine has been sat behind the front axle where some people count them as front-mid engine.

Fixed that.

Pal of mine briefly owned an automatic one of these. Boy, it was noisy in there!

I suspect that in Renaults case this layout allowed them to recycle their whole rear wheel drive 4CV/Dauphine drive train for FWD without too much re-engineering.

Seems to be a recurring theme with Citroëns.
