You can get one, but not a top quality one for that money.

I think most posters are ignoring the fact the op likes the idea of an m3 or m5. Hence my suggestion of an e36 m3 gt2. E30 m3 may not be great for the budget, e60 m5 bit new. A z3m coupe is a good shout too.

I'm not sure even a ropey E30 M3 is possible anymore for this budget, and the E60 M5 will just keep on dropping in value. The OP is also talking about a 4 seat minimum as far as I can tell, so Z3MC no good

E36 M3 not a bad shout, but I'd always go for an E34 M5 before one of those (MPG/reliability being ignored here). However, as the OP has already said he's thinking of M3s & M5s but worried about them not being unique enough, I would have thought it's other options he's looking for

For me the 90s "supersaloon" ticks all the boxes in this thread - Audi RS2 / Merc 500E / L Carlton...

I believe I am the only person who ever bought an Evo as an impulse purchase.
With similar criteria to yours I went to look at and M5, something else and an Evo 8. I thought there was no way I would buy the Evo as I thought they were a bit st. but I test drove one and it made me laugh like a child and made the M5 I had just driven feel like the dullest car in the world.
They 8's and 9's are now appreciating too (Im not surprised having owned a 10 it lost its magic completely).
I know you wont but here's an option

VX220 Turbo.

Could get a mint example for that, can only see the values going up if kept that way.

ETA - completely missed the 4 seats requirement!

OP needs at least 4 seats, otherwise I would suggest any Lotus or Caterham.

How about a Porsche - a 968 or early Cayenne?

Thanks for the input.

Some good suggestions so I will head over to the classifieds now.

As pointed out, four seats a MUST - otherwise I would keep the V6.

Delta Intergrale? 4 seats, interesting and will hold its value.

Then an E46 M3 surely? Good examples have firmed up, and some are even appreciating at the moment.

There will always be cheap st ones, but 10-13k on an E46 M3 will give plenty of smiles and shouldn't lose too much value.

Z4 M values have held steady and increased over the last year, £15k should see you in a sub 40k mile Roadster or sub 60k mile Coupe. Low volumes of both ever built, which usually bodes well for Motorsport BMW values. It's what I'd buy right now for a mixture of fun and hopefully financial sensibility...

I don't think you'd go far wrong if you chose a Monaro VXR.

You'll never tire of the reaction when you reply to random people asking you what is it? and how big is the engine?

Yep, get a good one while you still can. Only scabby ones tend to end up on the market while owners keep hold of the decent examples. I know several owners who've owned their cars 7 or 8 years, myself included.

Recent developments - I am re-prioritising and it leaves me with two options...

1) Sell the Vee (buyer already lined up - didn't even have to advertise) and don't bother replacing. I would use the money towards the aforementioned house move and be sensible; after all, the Clio is a 3rd car... We already have a Fiesta ST (new one with Mountune) and a 911 Turbo which I have always tried to keep the miles down on and save it for nice family drives out and occasions etc. This idea would mean that the wife and I would start using the 911 as more of a daily. In terms of maintenance, I already have a bit of a slush fund for the car and would stick some of the V6 sale money aside for what would mean extra wear and tear. Advisable for 18 months? I wouldn't cover huge miles.

2) Due to circumstances, budget now down to 10K. The second idea is therefor to sell the V6 and still buy the third car, saving my beloved 911 for best and keeping it as a bit of a garage queen. Ideas I have so far for this price are a Monaro (wife hates the looks but I like them) or an E46 M3. The Monaro appeals for rarity but the BMW "package" appeals. I'm just worried that the Beemer might be a dog that has been abused and ill-cared for at this price and could mean the potential for big bills. That aside, given my V6 has not depreciated and more or less sold before even being listed, it also worries me that there are a lot of M3s on the market and resale could be hard. That aside, prices appeat to be all over the show (£4K to well over £20K) and it worries me. Can anyone advise and/or reassure me? Wife likes the idea of an R32 Golf or a Focus RS (used to have one) but worried many have been abused. Any other decent ideas? I used to have an RS6 4.2 V8. Running costs were astonomical but they seem to have steadied on terms of price. If (a big if?) I could get one of them wit all the DRC sorted and brakes/tyres etc. that might be one idea. Tell me I am stupid and to go with option one by all means!!!

Thanks

No, I couldn't do that - then I would really struggle (at least the 911 has four seats)
