Hi all,

Does anyone know of an online site or tool that lets you upload a photo of your car and then lets you play around with different colour scheme? Sort of like a new car configurator, or a rudimentary photoshop.

Seems to me to be the kind of thing that should exist in the 21st century, but I can't find one anywhere

I havent seen one - primarily because the sort of software needed to recognise the outline of any car in any photo, and correctly change all the colour including and reflections in the paint (which isnt as simple as colour-bucketing over it - you need the right opacity to see panel creases etc ehilst still covering over the base coat, plus different base colours will require a differenct translucent hue over them to create the same final colour), whilst deleting windows, wheels etc from the process, would be a mammoth and incredibly expensive bit of coding - and it would probably still only have a 50% success rate.

There is a very good reason why it takes a good 10 minutes for even a skilled manual photoshopper to do it and make it look even halfway realistic or decent!

Understandably it depends entirely on the car you have, but a site like this might give you something of an idea if you can play around with hex codes or try to get the right colour by eye alone. If not it's a good way to kill ten or twenty minutes trying.

Thanks for that. Not exactly what I was expecting but useful nonetheless. Shame it doesn't allow for front ends to be painted (in the alfa racing way), only entire panels and areas of the car.

I'm surprised a configurator for classic cars doesn't exist. perhaps I'm being naive. Or I've just found my make-me-a-millionaire business idea.
