There clearly is a market for this type of car however small and from a posing point of view they are great with some useful added power on tap if you want it, I personally prefer a Coupe but my brother in law has a E93 M3 and he loves it, its great for showing off with the roof down and it sounds great too with the roof off.

It gives him the option of taking his kids out in it while having the wind in the hair enjoyment so if that's the type of thing you enjoy then this motor hits the spot and lets face it M cars have been getting more and more grown up with every generation anyway and as others have said if you like lighter and more focussed drivers car then there are plenty of other low volume manufacturers that give you that option.

Jeez, there's some ridiculous comments on here, well done PH!!

The M4 convertible exists to give us more choice chaps, its not going to be for everyone.

The world has moved on from the days of the E30, fine cars that they were and indeed are. The E30 M3 cabrio was lambasted at the time for being less focused, but really who cares? It was never meant to be an out and out sports car. One for the posers? Probably, yes, but why not.

Yes, the M4 is a heavy car, but I think we should applaud BMW for making it lighter than the old M3 Cabrio, even taking the added equipment levels on board.

At the end of the day, the regulations and effectively majority of BMW's customers demand all the safety and equipment that modern cars include, substantially more than even going back just a couple of generations to the E46.

PH inevitably has its share of armchair experts, who wouldn't spend more than £1500 on a shed. Its fair to say the M4 wasn't aimed at you....

I think BMW know their customers well, and this will do well.
Completely agree with the above. I've driven M, cars for many years and im not the kind of person who is tied to 1 brand but BMW and Porsche are 2 brands I struggle to walk away from. With these kind of cars its all about the drive and the M cars drive fantastic. I think people forget that Bmw have to move with the times so the car will be packed full of technology and they will be getting slightly larger than the previous models as that what people demand. what people have missed here is they have done all this and still made the car lighter than its predecessor and than some of the competition. In regards to the sales rates when I enquired on a coupe last week I was expecting a delivery date of January 2015 at the earliest so I don't think they are selling to badly hey. In regards to the looks it does look excellent but this is of course a personal thing but ive heard nothing but good things from people who have genuinely seen the cars.

Speaking of weight, just been checking a few threads on m3forum.net:

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=48...

M3 F80 total weight: 3590lbs. or 1629 kg's, with the following specs:

- Carbon Roof
- 0ZDB Driver Assistance Plus
- 0ZEC Executive Package
- 2MK M Double-clutch Transmission
- 02VF Adaptive M Suspension
- 02VY 19" Wheel 437 M Mixed Tires
- 1/2 tank fuel

The weight as advertised is 1535 kg's, so that's 94 kg's more.

And by the way; another thread does seem to suggest, although not quite sure, that the new M3/M4 does have a Li battery as standard.

You can have Estoril Blue on the rest of the 4 series range but not sure if its available on the M4 I know Yas marina and Tanzanite blue are both available though.

True.
I don't think people are doubting that. The X1 and X6 sell, I still wonder why though. wink

Typical PH response to a new M car is typical.

Every M car including the e30 was heavier than the rest of the range the only exception to that was the e46 CSL and what a sales success that was....NOT.

The people that actually buy these want the luxury that's why BMW provide it, they have always been loaded with kit.

I'm just waiting for someone to say "oh if they made an estate I'd be straight into the dealer to buy one" and the PH M circle will be complete.

Thought that the perspective from a current owner of the V8 convertible might be useful. I've had the car for 3 years, and for the money there is nothing that strikes the best compromise for a fast enjoyable daily drive convertible. Yes it weighs more and yes you can feel it, but when you have 2 kids and all the journeys associated with family life, ultimate performance/handling is only relevant a small percentage of the time. Interior space/quality, boot space, rear legroom, ease of parking, ground clearance, etc, are all just right and with the roof up it sounds and feels pretty much as solid/refined as the coupe, if not as agile of course. Roof down the V8 sounds absolutely fantastic (admittedly better with M performance exhausts which my car has). It draws just enough positive attention in most situations but without overtly looking like a yob in the school car park.
Running costs have also been very reasonable, although depreciation is a slightly different matter.
Performance for the UK roads is more than enough and whilst the new turbo six might be faster, if it sounds average, I just wouldn't be interested as for me that is a huge part of the appeal and thus a deal-breaker. On top of that I don't think that the new m3 front end appearance has nailed it like the last either.
For the one-car-for-all-occasions approach you are inherently going to be making a compromise, if someone can point me to a better alternative than the V8 convertible, I'm all ears. Save yourself the trouble if your response to that is buy two separate cars.....not an option for me.
As another current owner of the V8, I couldn't agree more with the above. Clearly a convertible is not quite as involved a drive as a coupe (although I wonder how many posters here are good enough drivers to get 100% out of an M3 - I certainly am not). But that's missing the massive point that, shallow as it may be, driving with the top down listening to that engine is FUN.

Estoril Blue is not available for the M4 but like you say the Yas Marina is and I think this looks epic! It's strange really because Estoril always use to be an M car colour, until now. Think they should of kept it.
Yas Marina: (I am aware it's an M3 and not an M4)

Would really suit a nice light grey or opal white leather.

And Escort Si-130.... Nice posts, you summed the haters/jealous guys/moaners/not a clue what they are on about guys up very well wink

In other words, you've added as much mass as you can to make this car seem heavier than it really is in comparison to other cars. If you're going to include the mass of a driver then use it consistently. The vast majority of car websites use curb weight and this gives a standard for readers to use to compare. Here, the writer attempts to skew the information in order to make the article more interesting.

As for the car, I think it's a real winner. It looks great, it has huge performance and seats four. Well done, BMW.

Nice try with the conspiracy theory but PH quote with a driver because that's how BMW quote their weights.

I couldn't help but think of this article reading another piece on an old mercedes 560 SEC which said "it turns into tight second gear corners well for 1,760kg of steel".

That's a merc superbarge! Where have we gone wrong when a 6 cylinder 3 series weighs more?

I usually much prefer Coupes to saloons but that M3 sits just so well and I would like to see Yas Marina in the metal.
