Hopefully you knowledgeable people at PH can help me.

I have bought a car with a private registration number that is of no use to me, but may be attractive to someone else. I would like to put the number on a retention certificate.

That part is easy enough.

The complicating factor is that I have my own private number to go back on the car.

What would be the process to put the old number on retention and put my own number on? Multiple forms or is there an easier option?

Send the DVLA the certificate of entitlement for your plate, the form to put the current plate on retention and a letter explaining what you want to do.

However unless the plate is desirable and easily sellable I wouldn't bother as it would most likely be a waste of £105 putting it on retention.

As always, what's the plate?

Thanks for the quick replies.

Plate is "F8 WBA"

Means nothing to me, but might be nice for a West Bromwich Albion fan called Fred Brown (a niche market, granted)

Just done this on mine, wanting to put my dad's old reg on my new car, and put the reg fro my old car onto my mum's car, which had my dad's old reg on it. I asked the DVLA and they said to simple send in two application forms and two methods of payment, all the relevant documentation and they would sort the rest out.

No mention of a cover letter or anything.

Wouldn't bother keeping that plate tbh. If you're going off estimates from those numberplate websites they're always extremely ambitious - you're just advertising the plate on their site waiting for a buyer rather than them buying off you in cash.

Maybe try the WBA fans website/forum (if that exists??) to see if there's any interest.

TBH i'm not overly fussed about selling. But why should I give it back to the DVLA for free for them to then sell on and make a profit?
