Because you want to feel like Barak on his way to the NATO summit in Newport.

Oh dear.

OK. I have plenty of friends - doesn't mean I have to drive with them, does it?

I am not asking to be convinced or trying to "get it" - just a genuine anthropological question, that is all.

Not criticising either.

I really enjoy meeting with other petrol heads - lost count of the number I spoke with yesterday at the SS.

Should have known that some would get all defensive, usual PH stuff.

My question has been fairly well answered by some. Thanks.

I don't get convoys either, just a PITA. Have joined in twice with clubs and once with friends, clubs one was super boring far too slow, other was some too slow (65mph along motorway) some silly fast (people booking it going through town centres) lots of showing off ejits. Trip with friends was just frustrating as we had a 1969 MGB with us that was just too slow, we actually had radios for that one and most of it was 'slow down I can't keep up', we were barely reaching speed limits but a tiny burst of acceleration pulled a massive gap and no point overtaking any dawdlers as the mg would be left. Much prefer these days to try and get group in as minimum number of cars as possible if off to a motoring event. Down to Le Mans this summer sharing driving one car was far better.

I've only been in one and although the service station stops were good, I didn't enjoy the fact that everyone decided that I should be at the front and hang back behind me.

I don't get em but then I don't get a lot of stuff. Whisper it, but I don't really get car club meetings either.

Convoys of old were for group protection in remote areas.

Convoys of today are for old men with few mates who still want to feel like they belong.

Me neither. If i wanted to spend my time with a group of middle aged men masturbating I would go cottaging.

I remember back in the 00's the local boy racers would convey everywhere

Would see big parades of them from the outskirts of town, into the centre, many laps of the town centre then back to mc Donald's 5 miles out of town

Not sure if serious? But just in case you are:

For fun
For friendship
So newbies know where they are going
For that early shared coffee at a motorway services with a bunch of like minded mates
When organising a stand at a show, its easier to have everyone turn up at a similar time, so all joining up at a point before makes organising it easier
Etc etc…
Pretty much this.

Plus a heap of supercars or custom cars travelling in a big convoy draws a lot more attention from the general public, and let's just be honest, if you've spent an absolute stload on buying or building your pride and joy then you want the whole world to turn and stare smile

Reminds me of this: http://youtu.be/YxCvcbkqW6I

It was a ballache if you were in a group of Minis and they wanted to go in convoy, as there was always someone in an 850cc one that could only do 45MPH on the motorway so you felt close to death as the lorries roared past you in your tiny tin can with a 20mph speed difference. Only did it twice and couldn't be arsed after that.

I quite enjoy them, was a lovely drive from M25 to Silverstone, even went a scenic route to avoid the traffic going in. Everyone is different smile

Maybe it's my inner child but I quite like a convoy!

Adds a bit of excitement to the otherwise dull drive to a show.

Within reason it's fun, but Harley riders look so daft - however all time worst I've seen was a huge convoy of BMW GS riders (all in their BMW suits, sat-navved and Tourateched up, matching beards and IAM badges) that was going so slowly they even had caravanners stuck in the irate queue behind them.

Me and my friends travel up to every Sunday Service together in convoy, we have walkie talkies to chat on the boring bits and have a bit of fun on the twisties togther.
If I'm going for just a drive, I'd want to be on my own - but going somewhere with an actual destination in mind, well to me you can't beat a convoy.

Heck, courtesy of Petrolhead Nirvanna, I spent a week in a Corvette convoy - also with walkie talkies!

Convoys are good if there are done right. The most recent one was going to jap fest 2 at donington par k few weeks back.
Was on stand with the mx5 nutz group. Which has 150 cars on stand of which several convoys were organised to meet at 1 location to go in together.
I offered to arrange the south wales/Bristol area. Left my home town in blackwood with 4 other mx5 at 4am in the morning fantastic blast up the boring m50 past to groups of Subaru clubs doing 85-90mph all waved and they chased after us to the next services on the m5. Meet up with another 7 cars had a good chat and talked about each others cars, what we have done etc over a cup of tea to keep your self awake. Left with around 11 cars in convoy light starting to break was brilliant sight seeing them in the mirriors going past other traffic.

Finally meet up with 60 other mx5 just outside the track the sight of 60 mx5 convoying up was amazing and loads of smiles and waves from kids in other cars going past.
Turning up too the show all in a row to meet the rest of the 80 car on stand brilliant.

All of the separate convoy leaders did a brilliant job of keeping everyone together and everyone in each convoys kept together does help when even the most basic mx5 can still do 100mph easy.

I also run a few mx5 meets in south wales through them gained a few good friends and introduced other to each other so got a great bunch of lads which makes each meet good seeing what mods we have done since the last meet welcoming new members to the group and the main point enjoying these cars over wales best roads nothing can beat that on a nice day.
