Done it once. Didn't get it. Happy to meet people with the same car, but I really don't like organised "fun".

By nature I am not a joiner, I am happy to be an individual in a crowd but not one of the crowd.

I enjoy a bit of a convoy sometimes. Often for meets / events it's more of a social thing than being about the cars these days, so generally a group of you are going to the destination - so makes sense to travel together? Plus I get a kick out seeing several of the same type of car on the road as a group.

It's just a bit of fun. It's a little feeling of a little road trip with friends every time - that can't be so bad.

Admittedly I'd probably be less enthusiastic convoying with people I didn't know at all.

invariably. especially with a cheap car like the MX5, you just get a load of drift kids with them now.
it's why i don't bother anymore.
That's just bull st being heavily involved within the mx5 group mainly the nutz forum the vast majority are not drift kids yes there are a few but not a great deal of them. The standard of events/runs/convoys through the forum is 2nd to none. Yes on the motorway/b roads etc will push on but around town is always sensible driving.

If everyone does the same as you none of the great events wouldn't happen.

My god this forum is full of grumpy old s with a hug chip on there shoulders.
Maybe i'm talking about runs rather than specifically convoys to a show etc. I have seen cars pulling onto motorways making deliberate and repeated sideswipes at cars alongside, drifting around roundabouts, and 2nd gear blasts through town centres with straight through exhausts.

call me a grumpy if you want but i'd rather not drive with people like this.

Conveys can be entertaining, but it's handy if you agree a few things before you set off. Things like: The route. Speed on various roads. To keep within visual contact of the car behind/in front where ever possible and slow down if it's not. (Such as a round abouts or tricky junctions) Any car with a problem should be in the front or centre of the pack, so that the next car can lend assistance if required etc etc...

Once did a LE-JOG with a small convoy, and we used CB's to stay in touch (Yep that 70's throwback) and yeah, it was fun. Do it again in a heart beat.

But if you don't like Convoys... Don't drive in em. Simple as.

I have always said the best part of the event is the convoy too and from. on the most part normal drivers want to get involved with us because of the noise cool

It was a ballache if you were in a group of Minis and they wanted to go in convoy, as there was always someone in an 850cc one that could only do 45MPH on the motorway so you felt close to death as the lorries roared past you in your tiny tin can with a 20mph speed difference. Only did it twice and couldn't be arsed after that.
My bog standard 850 would happily cruise at 70 all day, even though it took a fair while to get there.

Because a decent drive out being amongst a great set of cars and fellow car-nuts is simply an enjoyable thing to do.

This is still Pistonheads isn't it?

I don't think so - the opposite is so often true when the guy at the back does increasingly desperate overtakes to keep up. It's OK with a couple of friends but usually looks ridiculous when there's twenty or so vehicles with the attendant 'look at us' attitude. And as for identically clad fat blokes waddling along on Harleys ten feet apart ....God save us .

agreed, from a safety point of view it is not and drivers can end up being billy big balls trying to keep up with others etc. However in a convoy i also pay much more attention and am a much more focused driver when driving faster. On your own plodding along you tend to switch off.

Most people haven't experienced driving in a tight, well-matched group of capable drivers with well-planned routes designed for maximum fun and minimum traffic at the right times in the right places.

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

Even when I see one and I have nothing to do with it, I still have a look and think "they're enjoying themselves", whether it be a bunch of original Mini's, old codger Rovers,VW Campers,Cossies, chavved VXR's or an eclectic group of exotic performance cars.

Like other posters travelling en mass isn't especially my thing but I completely get that others prefer it. I don't mind a run out with a few friends/enthusiasts but other than that I'd prefer to make my/our own way.

Although not my thing, I do like to see convoys about especially if the cars are interesting and not obstructing anyone else.

That shouldn't be an issue if people actually know how to drive in a convoy.

It's not as simple as clearly some people think it is.

It depends on who is organising it and if everyone is in agreement with a few basic rules which when im leading a convoy or leading a run out will agree with. Can see your point of view in some can be s and take things to far but a dab of oppo on a junction at 6-7am in the morning with know when else around doesn't cause any harm along with a good blast in 2nd gear and depends on place and time.

Huh... Practice sessions are freely available every Friday on the M25 between junctions 10 and 5 between 16:00 hours and 20:00. Lessons include exercises involving rapid breaking, acceleration and maintaining distance in a 10,000 car single lane convoy
