I know its probably not news, but I am fed up with being ripped off by Insurance Companies.

I have held a full licence since I was 17 in 1990 (41 now) , and never had an accident or a claim and have points or convictions.

However I have limited no claims bonus. I believe I had up to 12 years in my late 20's , but then swapped to a classic car policy that did not accrue NCB.

Year before last , I bought a MGTF which was classified as a "modern" classic and I took out a classic policy which accrue's NCB , Thus I have 1 year and will hopefully have 2 in late October. With the 1yrs NCB my Fully Comp cost was £135 which i thought was pretty good, although mileage was only 3000 per annum.

Then earlier this year I bought another toy an AC Cobra Replica and was disappointed to be quoted £420 its only a 3.5 litre, but I didn't have time to shop around and thought fair enough its been built by some fella in his shed, and is a specialist vehicle and is agreed valued around £25k so maybe it will be more expensive than i initially thought.

However what has shocked my today is that I have just got a rover 75 1.8 tourer as a general run around / parts getter etc. its bangernomics, and cost me £800. First quote with a limited mileage of 5k was £770 ! which when i laughed was brought down to £400.

I really think the NCB system is broken, in that you can not use it on more than one car and they want it all there own way.. ie I am running 3 cars on policies that accrue NCB but if in 5yrs time I decide to cut down on the number of cars, I lose the NCB i have accrued on the car I drop.

Anyway sorry for the Rant, I will try the Rover clubs tomorrow to see if there are any better deals or "modern" classic policies to be had. I must admit I am always browsing ebay and never think about insurance having had 7 liter & high performance cars and never paying more than £300. and coupled with being an old boy now ) never expected to be quoted half the value of the car for insurance on a small engined shed ( performance wise )

I know exactly how you feel - It is just plain silly some of the prices they charge and you are correct the system is old and its just to extract more money out of us.

If yiou think your prices are bad - you should see what youngsters are having to pay when they first pass. Its just plain stupid. 1-2k plus and thats for a piece of st with a moped engine

Really is getting ludicrous,

Trying to insure a 95 diesel jeep worth £400, Getting quoted £1000 by churchill, who 4 months ago quoted me £600 to insure an XJR. No details have changed. I want to know how and why!

Did you shop around at all? From the post it doesn't really sound like you did...

Different insurers prefer different types of vehicles, e.g. Adrian Flux are very competitive on modified cars but won't touch BMWs. Many of them will also mirror your NCB from another policy.

Anyway if I had a quote for £300 for any of my cars I'd be over the moon!

Why do so many people seem to think that insurance is all about repairs to your vehicle ?

Most of the premium comes from the potential damage to human beings and the need to compensate them. The age and value of the vehicle is largely irrelevant when calculating that figure.

OP, you're not alone.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Pug207 as the family runabout. For me, the station driver and for my daughters a car to use any time they are at home.

Rang the insurance company to change the policy, gave the reg and paid the difference in premium.

Policy documents arrive and it states that the car is a 207 Sport and yet I bought it advertised as a 207 S (bear in mind I just gave the insurance company the reg. no). So I think that S is just short for Sport and think nothing more of it.

In conversation with a mate who's a main Pug dealer I quip about Peugeot's definition of Sport as from my point of view the car couldn't even pull the skin off a rice pudding. His reply was he'd seen the car parked on the drive and it was definitely an S and explained what the differences were (he also provided the build report for the car).

Well we all know that the mention of Sport in the decription tends to hike the premium so I'd thought I'd wait for the new V5 and see how DVLA defined it. (Thought it was possible that it may have been wrongly classified and hence why the insurance co. database was wrong).

V5 arrives and it's a 207 S so I ring the insurance co. to see whether the premium is correct.

To cut a long call short I end up being told that there is no difference in premium and that my policy was invalid as I had given incorrect information yikes

When I point out that all I had done was provide the reg details and their database had come up with the wrong description I'm then advised that I will have to pay £25 to amend my policy!!!

After some further discussion the guy goes away to take advice and finally returns to tell me that they will most magnanimously waive the amendment fee on this occasion. Guess who won't be getting repeat business come renewal.

Sky Insurance. Can't recommend them highly enough. 25, 3 accidents (non-fault), 6y NCB mirrored twice. Every person I've spoken to understands mods and they generally come out around 50% of the comparison sites price.

Swift cover was by far the best price for me & they have proved to be very good indeed.
I was getting quotes of around £800 - £900 for my Crossfire (I am 38 & been driving since 17)
& Swift cover has just come back for another year of £350 with pretty much all the benifits included.

Sometimes, when your insurance needs are complicated, or in your case where you need multiple vehicles and have limited NCB, it pays to use the services of a traditional insurance broker who will know where you are likely to get the best deal.

Had this issue with multiple cars recently. I'm 42, live in a low risk area, have over 10 years NCB and a clean licence.

Am already paying ca. £350 to insure a modified SEAT Leon FR diesel and was told my NCB could not be used to insure my recently-acquired second car, a 1993 BMW 325i coupe, so an extra £260 to insure the BMW for only 4000 miles a year, and that was on a classic policy.

I hear about people getting insurance quotes of less than £150 for second cars on classic policies but how does this work when NCB can only be used against one car?

My broker was Flux, BTW, mainly because of mods to the SEAT.

I'm fed up of insurance rip-offs and next year will be selling the SEAT, even though it's worth next to nothing, and will run the BMW as an only car. Despite the extra fuel costs it will still be cheaper than insuring two cars...

Classic policies usually don't accrue NCD.

True, but If i was being quoted a standard 3rd party rate based upon my experience, NCB ( Or lack off ) , and Vehicle performance ( ie likely hood of my taking some people out ) It would make sense, but i am getting more expensive fully comp quotes for a vehicle with a fraction of the performance ( ie lower likely hood of me losing control ) , greater safety features and as it is fully comp x50 times lower vehicle value ... it just doesnt make sense.

Sky Insurance , were of no help . My dad is with them for his TVR ( which i am also on and is a good price ) , but the guy asked what my latest quote was and without even asking any of my details other than my no claims on my other vehicles, said there was no way that kind of car could be insured for less than £350 .. That kind of car.. i am quite looking forward to driving this piece of exotica now.. when i pick it up i am going to have great fun racing the ferrari's on the way home !

So think i will have to go with Chris Knott Insurance for £350 frown

My total insurance and tax spend is now £1625 per annum... I know i dont need that many cars.. but as i can only drive one at once think this is crazy. Does anyone know of any multi car or fleet policies out there that do not overcharge and are flexible for adding / removing cars etc.. think i am going to have look into something else for next year...

Yes that's been my problem, whilst i have for many years insured a MGBGTV8 , other MG's and Mercedes W124 for premiums between £80-140 ( and appreciate that i saved a fortune) .. I lost my previously built up NCD , and now seem to be starting at the bottom again . My issue is why does NCD only cover one car, and we know Big Brother is out there, so why is it not obvious that I have never made a claim, been insured constantly , have no convictions, points etc.. It just seems one sided to me.

Can you explain to me why 1-2K for inexperienced youngsters is plain stupid?

If you think it's that stupid, start your own insurance company and slash the prices for young drivers. Let's see how much money you make.

I had my Porsche with Elephant and rung them to get a quote for a Focus I had purchased to use for commuting. They came back saying it would be cheapest for me to change my policy to a multicar one (they are the same company as Admiral). When I told them the best single car quote I'd found for the Focus they said they couldn't beat it but to hang on a minute while he spoke to someone else. He came back saying they would mirror my 5years ncb to the focus so that they could get the price below what I'd been quoted elsewhere. It also dropped the price of the insurance on the Porsche a chunk so I was left happy smile
