I know the car but not the model so can't clarify if correct or not but just a bit of daft fun.

This was a picture posted on my twitter feed earlier. Can anybody guess the make and model?

MkII Golf GL I would guess.

They are fairly wide wheels...

was it a Driver?

...although can I see 16 valves lay by the head?!

ETA - just to correct myself now I've seen the bigger photo - only 8 valves then!

I'm going with Mk2 GTD, exhaust pipe tip points downwards...

Mk3 Golf - thicker trim on the car sides than the Mk2

It's a mk2 Golf; 8 valves no spark plugs so it's a diesel but I don't know enough about the engines available to know which. I might be being blind, but I can't see a turbo.

Here's a bigger copy:

ETA: 185/60R14 tyres. That's quite wide for a mk2 Golf isn't it?

ETAA: Ah I've found the spark plugs so it's a petrol; and I think I can see a Carburttor and a cat? The "carb" might just be some sort of bulky throttle assembly though.

I'd say a Mk II Golf, looking at the front grille (it's only got two cut-outs for the headlamps). Which also suggests it's not a GTi or a Driver. Although I did originally think Driver after looking at the steel wheel design.

I can see four spark plugs, so I'm guessing it's a petrol model.

Safe guess would be a 1.3CL.

How do you guys spot these things? I know it's a mk2 golf, it's got steel wheels and it's red with a sunroof. Beyond that it's just a pile of rubble! I'd have a lot of bits left over trying to put that back together, actually that could be the story of my life....

Ah, I see a "Golf CL" badge. Left hand side under the rear light cluster. smile

Interesting to see a space-saver spare. I didn't realise they went that far back.

Hmm, I reckon I could have a good go at getting that into one piece... except for the wiring loom which would completely defeat me. smile

And another on the front wing. Whatever it is it's a great photo.

I just spotted that too and thought the same. After further extensive staring I can say it's left hand drive, maybe they had fatter wheels in other markets?

Seem to recall this was used in a VW advert in car magazines back in '89 or '90. Are they big bumpers on this CL? Can't quite make them out

There was also an advert with some guy in a suit standing in the empty engine bay of a GTi from back then. Think it was a 16v and a Golf, although may have been a Jetta
