New Mazda MX-5 unveiled

'A dramatic leap in Jinba Ittai driving fun' for leaner and meaner fourth-gen MX-5 [Updated with more pics]

Mazda has unveiled the all-new fourth-generation MX-5 at simultaneous events in the US, Spain and Japan. PH was at the latter, flagged as 'Thanks day in Japan' and attended by lots and lots of deeply reverential MX-5 fans dutifully parading past and paying their respects to a car that promises "a dramatic leap in Jinba Ittai driving fun." Probably for the best Harris wasn't present...

Leaner and significantly meaner MX-5
Leaner and significantly meaner MX-5
Being in Japan is great for atmosphere and lots of 'konichiwa zoom-zoom spirit', less so for getting hard facts about the car. But here's what we know so far; as well as looking a lot edgier the new MX-5 is significantly smaller and lighter than the one it replaces, Mazda apparently not reading the script that says new cars generally put on weight and size compared with their predecessors. Indeed, Mazda claims to have sliced "more than 100kg" out of the NC version and the new car is 105mm shorter, 20mm lower and has 15mm out of the wheelbase. The only dimension in which it's grown is width, even then by just 10mm.

Curiously there seems to be no confirmation about what's powering it, other than it's a 'Skyactiv-G' petrol engine. Running unusually high compression of 14:1, these Mazda engines have bucked the trend for downsizing and manage competitive CO2 and mpg numbers even in the relatively large 2.0-litre version. Some tech here from Mazda if you want to know more. In 2.0-litre form it develops 165hp in the Mazda 3 and combined with a kerbweight of around 1,150kg would be enough to provide the necessary zoom-zoom spirit but who's to say Mazda won't follow the weight-saving and downsizing mantra further and use the 1.5-litre version. This can reportedly go to 115hp, reprising the output of the original NA MX-5 1.6 of 25 years ago.

Smaller in every dimension apart from width
Smaller in every dimension apart from width
Whichever version it is we know from the previous unveiling of the running gear that it follows MX-5 tradition by linking engine, gearbox and differential by a 'power beam' for a rigid drivetrain. It's apparently mounted lower and further back than before too, lowering the centre of gravity and, says Mazda, reducing yaw inertia too. Transmission is a six-speed manual, which will please the purists while the steering is electrically assisted. Proof on that will be in the driving.

And the styling? Mazda is talking a lot more about this than the engineering for now, with lots of discussion of its 'Kodo' design language. While remaining true to the traditional MX-5 proportions the new car has a more pronounced rear-set stance and a much sharper, more aggressive look about it than the more cute'n'cuddly outgoing car. There's a hint of BMW Z4 in the proportions and surface detailing, perhaps a little F-Type in the rear lights and, inevitably, a bit more metal above the front wheelarches to provide cushioning for inattentive pedestrians. This doesn't do wonders for the looks but the design team have mitigated its impact and it's a much more dramatic and forward looking change than the play it safe second-gen and retro-themed third-gen.

In conclusion then Mazda seems to have stayed true to the founding MX-5 principles of light weight, normally aspirated power, rear-wheel drive and a manual gearbox while taking a much more radical step with the styling. It's due on sale next year, we'll be pestering them for a drive as soon as possible.

Looking forward to driving one, though not sold on the looks, proportions seem a bit off to me.

It'll sell by the bucket load no doubt, drive brilliantly and it looks great to my eyes. They're onto yet another winner.

Personally, that's an improvement over the last generation.

Don't mind the low power, as it was all about the driving experience for the 4 the mrs and I have owned.

Like the looks but the grill is a bit OTT but in the overall package doesn't matter.

What they do need to get right is the interior as that nose dived on the last generation.

Need more pictures and colours. Could look fantastic (black!), not liking the red. At least it look much less conservative (boring) now. Maybe a little too busy design for the previous minimalist generations, but you still have a Caterham 7 for that.

Like the other two billion on this planet, I too am an ex owner (mk1).

I like it. I hope the steering doesn't detract from the car as that was always my favourite bit about the MX-5s I had.

Am I mis-remembering or does this share underpinnings with the next Alfa roadster too?

Looks good, and the presence of a manual is comforting. smile Long live the MX-5!

They've done a lot of things right here, the looks are more aggressive, the c of g is lower, the car is smaller in length and wheelbase but same width so should be more nimble, the weight loss of course. Even the wheels seem still be not too big to save weight (unless the photo is deceptive) and in black or dark grey will look even smaller/meaner.

The electrical steering though. Hmm, will have to wait and see.

I hope they have the manual cloth hood on the more powerful models but I guess perhaps not?

I think it looks good. Rear view looks a bit F type and front view looks a bit mk2 MX-5. The wheels look a bit small to me though.

I don't understand the comments about the interior being bad on the mk3.5, I thought it was a big improvement on the mk1/2. I also hope they make the manual folding soft top available across the range, it is so much better to use than the folding hard top and looks better in my eyes.

Why? It's slightly lighter and more powerful than it's predecessor, and even that was enormous fun to drive. The MX5 has never been about chasing big numbers, I really hope they stick to that and don't make one with more power available. Stick to making the car lighter rather than more powerful, leave other companies to go chasing big BHP.

Anyway, I think it looks bloody smart. A much sleeker look than before - definitely one to look for in a few years time smile

That rear view does look a lot like the pictures trolled around when the Alfa/ MX 5 was being discussed. The lights look like a combination on 4C and 60s Duetto.

Looks fantastic to my eyes. Just hope it drives well and prices are reasonable. I like the fact that Mazda have chosen function over form, the result is a very purposeful looking car.

But surely better to judge a car on how the acceleration feels rather than sinking into horsepower snobbery?

I had a 140hp MX5 and despite some reservations about the car, power wasn't one of them. If driven properly, it was fast enough on a twisty UK road.

It 'felt' quick accelerating on the motorway despite the fact that it wasn't comparatively, and to get the power meant you had to concentrate on keeping the engine between 5000 and 7000 rpm, which I think added to the driving experience.

Autocar says it will have 140hp 1.5l and 180hp 2.0l engines.

Although rather 'tougher' than previous versions, I like the looks, especially the rear lights.
Nice to see they still have a manual hood.
Hopefully the stupid iPad screen on the dash will be optional...

I think it looks great! Hints at what the next round of Mazda's will be styled like for the next 5 years or so too. Shaving 100kg off is no mean feat. It will be interesting to see how it compared to the GT86 in price and handling, but as it's already 2 seats and a roof down it's a different market really.
