RE: New Mazda MX-5 unveiled
Discussion
Are there any proper side on shots anywhere? there's something really not right about the height of the bonnet line relative to the very low front...its a bit "BMW 3 series x 10". I expect its for impact regs but it looks very odd...
Weight, interior are both great steps forward...I just can't stomach the proportions

165 bhp though? BRZ springs to mind.
I do hope its available with a bit more zoom.
But surely better to judge a car on how the acceleration feels rather than sinking into horsepower snobbery? 165 bhp though? BRZ springs to mind.

I had a 140hp MX5 and despite some reservations about the car, power wasn't one of them. If driven properly, it was fast enough on a twisty UK road.
It 'felt' quick accelerating on the motorway despite the fact that it wasn't comparatively, and to get the power meant you had to concentrate on keeping the engine between 5000 and 7000 rpm, which I think added to the driving experience.

I (and I would hope most others) would take lighter and smaller over increased power output any day of the week, particularly given that this is the MX-5 we are talking about.165 bhp though? BRZ springs to mind.

Adding power is easy (you can always take it to a tuner), but a significantly lighter car straight out of the box? Mazda should be applauded, in my opinion.

Agreed, acceleration, handling, braking, economy - lightness is the key, its just a difficult thing to achieve with any measurable success for a mainstream car these days due to requirements/regulations and the fact that the mass market simply want somewhere nice to sit, forgoing aircon, sound deadening or plushy, comfy seats isn't something the average car user is inclined to do when they just want to get from A to B safely, quickly and in comfort.Adding power is easy (you can always take it to a tuner), but a significantly lighter car straight out of the box? I really like the look of this.

I don't normally criticise designs but I think the exterior is absolutely hideous. I really like the classic looks of the current model and would consider buying one - maybe. BUT I am getting old and maybe this is not the market that Mazda wants. It makes sense to get a younger mid 20's market, low power car potentially cheap insurance - rear wheel drive, tuneable etc. So if all the good response is from mid 20's who are interested in buying it then a job well done. If not I smell turkey.
Love this!
I hope it lives up to expectations.
A remarkable styling job considering modern regulations and the fact they haven't got mush size to spread the shape over and still have all the right heights for pedestrian impact etc (if you see what i mean).
you do start asking yourself - how much do i want a quick car..!
Since they decided to turn the alfa into a fiat it's massively boosted the Mazda's chances!

The three quarter shots on Top Gear (which appear to be Mazda publicity shots) look stunning...
In a deep, rich blue, one of these will be on my drive in a year or two - as long as the steering doesn't kill the feel, and the engine has the capability to be tuned if required.
Anyone know what tuning options there are for the SkyActive engines? Assume due to really high compression ratios a supercharger is a much more complex proposition?
