Lets hope these are bought in their thousands by middle aged ladies who cosset them for a few years until they have depreciated massively, and can be thrashed and enjoyed by petrolheads who have picked them up for a song second hand.
Amen to that My plans of a GT-86 for her and a sensible estate for me have been blown apart by this. We need 2 cars that can transport a family as I work away a lot.
Now I am thinking cheap 4 seater for her, cheap company car for me and a mk4 in red with black wheels in the garage for both of us at weekends
By both of us, I of course mean me

Anyone else trying to decide between this new MX5 and a GT86/BRZ? Thoughts? Clearly top down motoring would add another dimension.
I imagine that with the BRZ price drop it will be very similarly priced to the MX-5. Although how much they will cost on lease deals remains to be seen. The MX-5 is such a great formula, the only reason that I haven't got one now is that I fancied a change after 8 years. I'd be tempted to give the BRZ a chance, as they are rarer on the roads than the MX-5 and the local Subaru dealer are a lot better than the Mazda dealer, but it is that close.
Firstly, I like it.

The wankel rotary engine in one of these, as a flagship "Racing" model would be awesome.
Lighter than the 2 lt lump, very high revving and 220hp+
I never understood why Mazda have never fitted this engine in the MX5, better suited than in the heavier RX7 I would have thought.
I agree, I believe that there was a "skunk works" project with the NC that eventually became the RX-8 but a shame there wasn't one from the factory. Lighter than the 2 lt lump, very high revving and 220hp+

The electrical steering though. Hmm, will have to wait and see.

Don't like the idea of the steering system. We shall see.

Long as they sort the EPAS out (and there's no good reason they shouldn't), should be onto a winner
There was nothing wrong with the EPAS on the RX-8, lots of people have grumbled about other implementations but I don't recall people complaining about that one (well apart from the expense if it breaks). I doubt the MX-5 would be any different.skinny said:
good looking car. imagine it could be even better with decent wheels and a folding hardtop
No thanks. Leave the folding hardtops to the heavy all show no go cars and leave the MX-5 as lightweight thanks.Edited by Fastdruid on Friday 5th September 11:18

I'd also be curious to see the difference in feel between both with a depowered rack (ie same ratio but no motor).

No, but would 2 useful/useless rear seats be a benefit or not?
Well, I'll let you know if I ever see a human being in the back of an Evora.IMO 2-door saloons like BMW M4 make a hell of a lot more sense than 4-seat sportscars.
I've seen posts on PH about Evora owners using back seats for occasional short journeys. Which is what 2+2s are for - occasional use. Just seeing an Evora is a rare enough event!
For something more common - loads of people use the back seats of 911s for children.
