MX5s (standard ones anyway), have never been about big power numbers.
indeed.
Although to make it more interesting i think BBR can add a few NA horses to this.
They can already get 200 from the existing 2.0 which is being carried over to the new model. so a proper sports car for under 30k
This engine is very high compression (13.5:1, I think), long stroke (in the search of torque) and narrow bore. The long bore has, apparently, been compensated for (for revability) using lightweight crank, very lightweight pistons (seriously - google them), and light weight conrods. There's also a very complex, high flow exhaust header.

In short, people are going to struggle to tune it. Exhaust header is critical so can't be swapped and little gains to be had there anyway. The high compression is going to make boosting it very tricky.

Look at the shape of the piston top to see some of the strategies for avoiding pinking with the already high compression - it will give you a feel for how 'highly strung' this engine is going to be.

^^ this is all for the 1.5. Will things be that different for the 2l? They're both 'skyactive' engines...

I thought the suggestion was the 2.0 might have a turbo on it. So that'll open up the tuning options.

Edit: No my mistake.. Dodgy reading ability in full screw up

mmmm, so the 1.5 will be difficult.

The 2.0L is already up to 200hp with camshaft and exhaust:

it's also well reviewed as living up to it's power claims and putting some life into the 2litre.
I had an NC, with suspension sorted by WIM. It was a lovely car and i miss it, but the engine was stale and flat.

BBR and the skyactive 2.0 in the mk4:

200bhp NA or 250bhp SC with circa 1000kg sounds appealing.

For once the entry level version seems like a worthy purchase. I wonder how much heavier the 2.0 verson will be?

That's the 2.0 lite engine from the current MX-5 which is a completely different engine to the 2.0 in the ND

BBR are working on power upgrades for the SkyActiv 2.0 engine though, using a new Mazda3 as a development mule.
