RE: New Mazda MX-5 unveiled
Discussion
N/A i'd have thought. Mazda don't do turbo's anymore. probably suits the sports car better too. (said as a mk1 mx5 turbo owner)
@ Sway, i'm all for jinba ittai. i'd just like the car to look good at the same time
every model of mx5 so far has come out here with comedy high suspension as standard.
it's horse and rider as one, not giraffe and rider.

I think it looks amazing. Even better, imagine what the Alfa Romeo version will look like? I think they've touted the same 4C engine, albeit slightly de-tuned for the Alfa version. Start saving (and convincing the other half) now...
Wasn't it said it will be a Fiat or Abarth instead and use turbocharged 1.5 (or 3-cyl??) engines? I think if it will be styled similar to most Fiat vehicles then it will look horrid, but that's all subjective. That said, this looks fantastic in and out. I wonder how similar the most powerful model is to the GT86, being an owner of one. Hoping there are good tuning options in the future to make this even more tempting. Unless there is a new Honda S2000.

I don't think they're "new engines" as such, they're tweaked versions of the current "SkyActiv" petrol units used in other Mazdas. All are naturally aspirated in their current forms, I would assume they'll remain so.
That's good. A 180bhp 2 litre would be perfect. At 14:1 compression though, I don't think it'll retain the same 'easy to charge' character as the old models. Sounds like adding power to this one might become a whole lot more expensive...

1248kg the outgoing 2.0 mk3.5 with folding hardtop, loose 100kg, so 1148kg that's 208kg heavier than a mk1.
And more than an early mk3 - my 2006 soft-top was weighed at 1089Kg when it was corner weighted (standard interior etc, 1/2 tank of fuel)...I was expecting closer to a tonne...
The universe is conspiring against my wallet. This will add further urgency to the choice... :-(
On Saturday I saw three Mk1's for sale locally, £750, £850 and £1150, one was alittle tatty but all had full tax and MOT, one was even a lifelong garaged car!
Since we're 4 generations in now when will Mk1's start going up?
FWIW- I think it looks Ok, not the Elan loveliness of the early ones and the Jag cues are pretty clear but why not?
Any shots of one roof up?
