This is so bloody confusing,

i have an XC60 which has a 'max possible towing weight - braked' of 2000kg (source - volvo website) and an actual weight of 1796kg
and an Ifor Williams BV105g box van with a gross weight of 2700kg but an actual weight of 735kg and a loaded weight of just under a tonne

Am i allowed to tow it?

my licence has everything (passed in 95)

As you have B+E then the lower of the towing capacity or trailer MAM applies
In this case 2000 is lower than 2700 so 2000 is used as the max actual weight the trailer can be when loaded
2000 minus 735 = 1265 so you can load 1265 into the trailer

thanks for the clarification Rog, so i'm to assume that just because the trailer 'could' in theory overload the car, doesn't mean that you can't tow it, you just have to make sure that it is running well below it's maximum capacity.

Ie. common sense rule!!!

You got it

Had it been the 'could' then virtually every car 'could' exceed the 70 mph speed limit as they have been designed to do that
