What would you buy?
The 911 or Chimera?
Car will just be used mainly as a weekend end toy although i expect the 911 would be more usable for more often use than the chimera.
Thats if i could find a descent 911 for my budget.

Witch would you go for any why?

You'll never regret a chimaera. wink

Do loooooooooooods of research beforehand, ask for 2nd opinions. There's plenty of dogs out there with the chim and 911.

I use my tvr as a daily. In-fact they're probably more reliable if you use em!

£12000 will buy a lovely 4.0 TVR Chimaera or a fcked 911 996 - as for any other 911 forget it (beyond a rebuild/write off).
It's a ludicrous situation, but that's the TVR/Porsche relationship... 'twas ever thus , so make the most of it smokin.

I bet when you are driving your 911 and you hear Chimera go past you will think very hard about what you could have had.

Tbh, I think you'd have more fun in a Chimera, 911s are very good but if it's just a weekend toy, the TVR is more of an event. They're a bit more lairy and theatrical. If it was a sports car to use every day and have fun on the weekends, the the 911 would win every time.

Do you mind getting your hands dirty and re-attaching bits that have fallen off? If you do then it's TVR you'll want; it's a properly exciting, head turning, amazing sounding, surprisingly practical machine. I wouldn't want to be in a crash in one, though.

+1

I'm running a 997 at the moment and whilst it's a fantastic all rounder and great daily I don't want to go for evening drives in it.

I had a cerbera recently which was more of an event but I could not get on with the poor level of engineering and need to fettle. Fine if you have time but I didn't.

I still like Chimeras though and may get on at some point but need rear seats for the kids

Your not ready for a Chimaera yet.... you need to spell it right 1st wink

As has already been mentioned you will get a nice Chimaera for that money but a very poor 911. If it's the Porsche route you want to go then £12k would suit the Boxter perhaps.

Many Chim owners use their car on a daily basis without issues, mine not used everyday but 8,000 in 14 months which has all been for pleasure driving and what a pleasure it has been. If i need to pop out for a short trip i usually find myself 20-30 miles away as I just love driving it.

One reason i can think of not wanting one of these cars is if there are times when you just want a quiet comfortable relaxed journey. The Chimaera is far from uncomfortable,i did over 7hrs in the seat in one day not so long ago and would of been very happy to do another 7hrs. But driving the TVR is an event every time you turn the key,it's a proper sports car with no driving aids to save you and with many having modified exhausts if the roof happens to be up then they can be a bit noisy/droney.

I'm not in the market for a 911 but if I was i would want £20k to open the market to get a better one,£12k your looking at the very low end which could spell trouble. But £12k could also bring you unseen expense on a Chimaera or any 14-18 year old car,but for your budget you are at least avoiding the low end scale of the Chimaera's

EDITED

Not to suggest that your buying the car to be SEEN in but I have on many occasions been sat behind a 70k Range Rover and behind me is 50-60k of Jaguar,BMW,Porsche and passers by shout WOW TVR. They generally speaking have a great following from enthusiasts and even from people who know diddly squat about cars. It's not why I or i'm sure yourself want this kind of car but it's a nice feeling biggrin

.. My religion is Orthodox TVR but my broader PetrolHead Beliefs dictate that at some point i will own a Porsche 911 road car, and maybe it wont engender the same good feeling from other (non PH type) road users.

Generalising of course, but most other road users seemed to "like" or at least not hate TVR's ,from Zafira's to Bikers aTVR is somehow accepted smokin.

That typed, as my current daily is an MR2 Roadster (excellent little car BTW) it would seem that i dont let the the perception of other road users ,to my car, affect me too much biggrin

Quite. For that money you will get a really good Chimaera or a really ropey Porsche. Go figure.

Buy wisely though - all Chimaeras will be prone to outrigger rot to some degree depending on how they have been kept and maintained (apart from the ones that have had a body-off restoration, of course).

If you're (note spelling) going to castigate someone over spelling and grammar then you might want to check your (note spelling) own first. wink

TVR would be a better bet than a 911 for £12k.

Have you considered a Lotus Elise or Caterham if it's a weekend toy?

Not totally true, a top 996 with full history and Hartech rebuild is totally achievable at that price. Just sold mine so I know!

This is not a practical purchase. It's an emotional one.
which one is going to make sure you smile every time you open the garage door?

That's the one you want.

Drive them both. Then once you've heard the TVR, you'll buy the Chimaera. I may not be wholly impartial however... But in your shoes, well, look at my profile..

If you do get a Chim as a play car, make sure you have a remote battery charger cable for it. The doors are electric, so if the battery goes flat because you've not used it for say 2-3 weeks you won't be able to get in it (without getting under the car to find the secret cable for opening the doors remotely).

Echoing above comments, you'll get a hell of a chimaera for that budget. Very comfy cars with a decent ride and good seats. I never use the stereo in mine but you could for long distances, although the radio is ste as there's no aerial. I've got sleeved exhausts which are very very loud, but at 70 ish, the engine isn't working hard and you're more aware of wind noise than the exhausts. It certainly bellows though when you want to!

Plenty advice on the TVR forum.

I've also been considering a 911, but will await until after the next house purchase before I make that leap. Next toy will likely be an Elise in the interim.

Thanks for the reply's so far keep them coming.
About 10 or so years ago i was in the same position im in now only then its was a choice of 3 cars.
M3 evo
Tvr
Air cooled 911 (they were a lot cheaper then)

At the time i went for the BMW as it was the newest and at the time best performing car out of the 3 or so i thought.

Then the day came when i had a bit of a play with a chimera and he just seemed to cruise past, At the point i,d known i,d bought the wrong car.

Ive been thinking of buying a tvr for the past few months until a few few weeks ago a Dax ac cobra fell into my hands witch looked amazing but after a week or so i started to dislike it wasent a v8 btw
It just felt like a toy car not really as in factory built witch of course it was wasent.

Witch has got me thinking is the tvr going to feel the same being made of fiberglass ?
Now ive seen a few nice looking 911.s has got me all mugggled again.

Apologizes for any spelling or grammar mistakes BTW but its early on a Sunday morning biggrin

Chimaeras are great cars (I've had 3) but they are very agricultural in terms of mechanics, and would lose out to a 911 in useable performance. I'd probably go Chimaera just to have had the experience of owning one, but whilst I cant say I really "get" Porsches, the 911 is the better car. Having a Chimaera is a bit like having a classic car - they always need fettling!

I genuinely think you are looking at chalk and cheese.

The two cars are just so different that the moment you sit in both and drive both you will know if you want the Porsche or the TVR.

It does sound (and maybe I'm reading too much into your final comment) that deep down you'd prefer the Porsche so then it would be best to build the budget and buy what you want.
