Cars you wanted and cars you ended up getting
Discussion
For my first car I had decided I wanted a mk2 Renault Clio as I liked the looks and it was fairly cheap to insure. I was buying the car and my parents were going to pay the insurance.
So instead of getting the 1.4S with alloy wheels, bucket seats etc I was forced to buy the sub 60hp 1.2. To make matters worse, it was a bright gold coloured one too.
Despite this, I eventually grew fond of it over the 4 years I had it as it never went wrong and survived all the abuse a 17 year old could throw at it.

Started looking at a replacement to my 200sx road legal fast road/track toy. Started with Westfield test drove one and almost took the plung, then moved the search onto MX5/BMW Z3 or Z4, S2000 and ended up with a BMW 330ci convertible. Common sense and not being selfish (wife and kids) got in the way.
Can use it on track and with the family as a bit of an event for them.

Went out one saturday to get the missus a nice 5 door polo, as we had just had our first child.
Came back with a bright yellow Mercedes vito. With a row of seats in the back.
When she eventually spoke to me again and started using it, she liked it. Plenty of space, so pushchair went in without being folded, sliding doors so no stooping to put little one in the back, high driving position...

Morgan especially is an absolute hooligan of a car.
You have even answered a question I had yesterday.I was at Shelsley Walsh Breakfast club Sunday morning and on the front was a hardtop Morgan Aero 8 and was giving a good look over with two other TVR owners when I asked do they have a soft top version.
No one was sure but the educated guess was No they are all hard top. How wrong can you be,goes to show you don't get to see many of these about.
ps I have never seen one driving on the road... Love it by the way
Really wanted an MX5 (as a second car) having just sold my discovery off-roader. Went to view one at a blokes house that looked nice. It was raining that day, and the car wasn't quite right. As I left the place I noticed a defender with a few mods for sale, parked out the front of a country-manor type house. It looked so purposeful in the gloomy, rainy weather. I knocked on the door and bought it there and then. The girlfriend was fuming.
2 years later, when I had hardly used it for off roading due to having a new born, I sold it and bought.... an MX5.

I wanted a Mazda RX-7 but couldn't insure it last year as I was on a relatively new UK license. So, to get my rotary fix I bought an RX-8 with good paint for cheap and had the engine rebuilt, ported and put a few more goodies on it for far less than an ideal RX-7 would have cost me. I am still enjoying the RX-8 and I think the wife is happy I chose it due to its four seats and decent boot space. Still, an RX-7 will be mine one day and I think I will start looking next year to import the right one.
My last car purchase was a little off the mark. I had been looking for 5 door estates (Audi S4/S6, BMW E60 touring)for family duties. I have two daughters (9 months and 3.5 years) and a 7.5 stone dog. Rear doors and estate was a must, 100% no question.
Ended up with a BMW 630i Coupe.
If we take the dog we need to take two cars. Dog travels with me in the back on my Z3 MCoupe.
Not the most practical choice i ever made.
