C63 AMG - Owners' views

Before giving the C63 back we had a mini meet of PHer AMG owners - seems our love for the car is shared

If one thing became clear over our long-term loan with the 507 Edition C63 AMG wagon it's that it's a car much coveted by PHers. Not too surprising really. We love a V8 in these parts and the C63's insertion of a frankly ludicrous engine into sensible pants C-Class clothing is a proven winner at all levels.

Spotting the theme here?
Spotting the theme here?
The C63 hasn't just departed the PH fleet either; in a couple of weeks we'll see its successor unveiled at the Paris show and though it'll keep the C63 name it downsizes to4.0 litres, gains a couple of turbos and takes the AMG C-Class off in a whole new direction as dictated by the new W205 version's swoopier, more techie manifesto. The basics of a socking great V8 in a relatively small car will remain the same of course but it's going to be a very different beast and a huge contrast with the outgoing W204.

Why do we love that car so much? You've heard Dan waffle on about it enough. Here are the voices of the owners gathered together at Topcats Racing for a bit of a meet a couple of weeks back. See if you can spot certain common themes in their answers...

Name: Anthony Allen
Current car(s): "C63 507 Edition Coupe."
Previously owned: "2007 Audi S3, 2002 Punto Abarth."
Why a C63? "That engine!"
Loves: "Fast cars!"
Hates: [Nothing specified!]
How do you justify it to yourself? "It's my only extravagance."
What will you replace it with? "Not even thinking about it yet..."

Name: Simon Coates
Current car(s): "C63 coupe, BMW E46 330Ci"
Previously owned: "BMW E46 330d, Mazda 323 ZXi, Peugeot 306 XSi, Renault Clio 16V, Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9"
Why a C63? "I promised myself a V8 ever since my dad had a couple of Rover SD1s in the 1970s. It was either a C63 or an M3 and there was no contest..."
Loves: "That noise..."
Hates: "...the thought of not having it one day."
How do you justify it to yourself? "It's now or never..."
What will you replace it with? "Nothing - it's irreplaceable. Modern cars are becoming increasingly anodyne and the C63 is a monument to defying convention."

Name: Andrew Spakouskas
Current car(s): "2014 C63 saloon and BMW Z4 Convertible (the wife's)."
Previously owned: "Porsche Cayman S, Nissan 350Z, Mazda RX-8, BMW 530d, Honda Accord Type R, Land Rover Freelander (yuck!), Nissan 200SX S14, Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type R Coupe, Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000 (Prodrive), Nissan 200SX S13, Ford Orion, Vauxhall Chevette."
Why a C63? "When I moved in with the now wife, we both had two seaters (Cayman and Z4). It was a pain in the backside so I decided to swap one for a four-seater. The C63 saloon was the most appealing four seater I could find without having to spend Quattroporte money."
Loves: "The sound, the power, the speed."
Hates: "The height of the seats (wish they would lower a bit more), the automatic gearbox (wish it was like a PDK 'box for changes), fuel consumption."
How do you justify it to yourself? "What's to justify? I wanted a four-seater and the C63 saloon is a very practical car."
What will you replace it with? "I won't be changing for nearly two years but if I was to pick something now, a Nissan GT-R or a Maserati GranTurismo would be my pick - both were considered this time around."

Name: Grant Hibbett
Current car(s): "C63 AMG wagon, Caterham Supersport."
Previously owned: "BMW Z3 M Coupe, BMW 130i, BMW 330i (E46), Skoda Fabia vRS, BMW 325i (E36), BMW 325i (E30)"
Why a C63? "The last of a dying breed of big capacity naturally aspirated V8s."
Loves: "Engine, noise, ride and handling compromise, steering, understated image."
Hates: "Fuel consumption, rattles."
How do you justify it to yourself? "By scratching the V8 itch that every petrolhead has combined with the fact that if I didn't get one now, I wouldn't be able to at a later date as it's the last of a dying breed."
What will you replace it with? "A Mercedes E300 Bluetec Hybrid. Off to diesel boredom, albeit with some hybrid gubbins to play with. However the Caterham is my guilty pleasure and will help soften the blow of the C63's departure."

Name: Paul Smith
Current car(s): "2014 AMG C63 Estate, Mazda MX-5 Mk3."
Previously owned: "Mercedes W204 C350 Estate (Brabus remap), Porsche Cayman, Honda Civic Type R, Mazda MX-5 Mk2.5 (x2), Triumph Street Triple, Toyota AW11 MR2 Mk1 Supercharger (x2), Toyota AW11 MR2 Mk1 T-bar."
Why a C63? "The ongoing love affair between Dan and his long-term C63 estate caused me to put it on my shortlist when I was looking to change my car this summer. This shortlist included C63, RS5, S4/RS4 Avant, Porsche Cayman S and 640d, and the C63 had the most character and fun/£ given the great run-out deals that were available at time of purchase.

The engine has been written about endlessly as being the last of a line, and the finest normally aspirated V8 and as such is to be enjoyed while it's still possible to do so. I also love how the C63 estate looks, slightly more discreet than the coupe but still with a distinct look that makes it instantly recognisable to car enthusiasts."
Loves: "The engine is a masterpiece, and the noise is both theatrical and addictive, whilst it is also very liveable as a (reasonably) practical main vehicle. I never get tired of the start-up and like many owners always leave the door ajar to get the full benefit. Tunnels have become a firm favourite as well."
Hates: "Range anxiety, the way the last quarter of a tank seems to last about 15 minutes no matter how you drive. The petrol tank could do with being about 50 per cent larger as well."
How do you justify it to yourself? "No need to do so! I love it, it makes me smile, so why not?"
What will you replace it with? "As I've only had the car since June, it's not on my radar to think about a replacement yet, but possibly another AMG. Or a well loved C63 507..."

Name: Paul Wafer
Current car(s): "C63 AMG Coupe, E220 AMG Sport Estate seven-seater."
Previously owned: "E60 M5, 135i, E92 M3, Z4 M, X6, Porsche 996 C2, Audi S4 Avant."
Why a C63? "I'd done most of the BMs and got a bit bored with looking at the same steering wheel. Needed a practical car that the wife could use too to pick the kids up in if need be. Couldn't really turn up at work in a Porsche. The C63 ticks so many boxes, it's an everyday car that sounds awesome without having to drive the wheels off it all the time. Comfortable, well built, looks great ... but the sound/engine is probably 99 per cent of the reason to own one. It's more of a road than track car, but not too ostentatious for parking in the company car park. Talking of which, using any multi-story car park brings a smile to anyone and everyone in earshot!"
Loves: "Every morning when I turn the key and it fires into life, like Thor clearing his throat. A year in and it still makes me grin like a Cheshire cat. It's a sound that hasn't got boring or tiring, perfect! The car drifts and lays 11s at the blink of an eye. Normally by six months of ownership I'm lining up what I'd like next, I've really not had that with the C63. Odd, because I never thought I'd be driving a Mercedes!"
Hates: "Having to pay for a limited-slip diff was a bit much on this level of car, but I guess most of the owners wouldn't want or even know what one is."
How do you justify it to yourself? "Plain ignore the bills, not sure any amount of man-maths will justify owning a car that has averaged 17.2mpg over 10,000 miles (I actually think this is pretty good going considering it's a 6.2 V8 that rarely sees a motorway). The difference is though, I've not once felt any remorse when filling the tank up, it's like a fairground ride, you're just buying more fun tokens. The E60 M5 for example would always grate on me when filling up, like it was not worth the fuel I was putting in it."
What will you replace it with? "Difficult one this. None of the current M3/4/5/6 models appeal to me, just leave me a bit cold, no giggly school kid feeling to them ... uber fast, but in a world of ever increasing speed camera numbers, what we really need are slower cars that sound and look awesome. I suspect I'll replace the C63 with an eco-box to get to the office (BMW i3, VW Golf GTE or Lexus CT220h) and get a fun weekend car like an Exige S, 996/7 GT3 or similar. The new C63 will be super quick I'm quite sure, but will it have the same goose bump evoking sound and silliness? Also the new C-Class looks are very odd, like an S-Class that's been shrunk in a Korean washing machine."

Name: Alex Lomas
Current car(s): "C63 Estate and F30 BMW 320d"
Previously owned: "TVR Chimaera, Honda S2000, BMW Z3 M, Westfield, Lotus Exige, Vauxhall VX220, to name a few."
Why a C63? "We needed a mid-sized estate for the other half (it's her car!) to lug around our Weimaraner so the C63 seemed to fit the bill perfectly."
Loves: "Exhaust note on cold start up."
Hates: "Low rent interior."
How do you justify it to yourself? "Work pays the running costs and fuel bill, seemed a no brainer."
What will you replace it with? "Not sure, have recently looked at the Macan Turbo and Cayenne."

Name: Alex MacGregor
Current car(s): "C63 AMG Black Series, Porsche 996 GT3 RS, Porsche 997 GT2 RS spec, Mercedes G63 AMG."
Previously owned: "CLK63 AMG Black Series, 996 GT2, 996 Turbo, E46 M3, E92 M3, E39 M5, E60 M5, C36 AMG, three Sierra RS500 Cosworths, Focus RS500, VW Golf R32, and more..."
Why a C63? "Best option on the market and better than BMW M3 and Audi RS4."
Loves: "The noise and look."
Hates: "None ... OK, maybe fuel tank could be bigger!"
How do you justify it to yourself? "Hahaha, I don't!"
What will you replace it with? "Nothing, it's a keeper!"

Name: Anthony Flynn
Current car(s): "C63 AMG Edition 507; other half has a Nissan Juke"
Previously owned: "In reverse chronological order: Mercedes C320 CDI Sport, Audi A4 S Line, E46 M3, the 'wilderness years' (don't ask!), Toyota Corolla GTI (mag featured!), Toyota Corolla GT."
Why a C63? "I had to sell my M3 because I couldn't afford to run it. At the time I swore I would get back in an M3, but when reading all the group tests, and then looking at hours of clips of C63s on YouTube, I started to switch allegiance. That is when the obsession began! I refused to even sit in one until, financially at least, I was certain I could get one. I also needed something relatively discreet for work (yes, it's all relative I know)."
Loves: "I love the noise, steering feel, damping, looks, 'trinkets' on the 507 especially the Alcantara wheel, the ability to rumble through town and take unsuspecting passengers, yet at the flick of a switch to S+ and a heavy right foot, turn it into a snarling beast."
Hates: "I hate the fuel range (180-230 miles per tank typically) as I can't get to work and back for five days without filling up. I don't hate it, but the gearbox at low speeds is not great - slowing down for a junction without stopping and coming back on the power can result in really jerky drivetrain shunt, for example. I was also disappointed by the dashboard squeaks and rattles from a brand new near £80K car."
How do you justify it to yourself? "I worked very hard, focused on the achieving the car (I had a big picture of one on my desk for over a year to keep me motivated) and it gives me huge pleasure. Cars and driving are my 'thing' and as life is about trying to do more of the things that make you happy, this is how I justify it to myself. The lease cost is £811p/m which I think is reasonable, which helps, but I try not to think about the c.£400-£500 fuel bill every month!"
What will you replace it with? "Really tough! We are likely buying a house so the budget might have to change when my lease is up in September 2015. I am, however, looking at an E63 S estate (this is my favourite estate), Range Rover, but of course I am really looking forward to the C63, in S guise of course! I would however also look at an M5 and a Panamera."

Name: Ben Edwards
Current car: "C63 wagon, LSD, Perf Pack."
Previously owned: Porsche 997 C2 S, E90 320d Touring, E46 320d Touring, Nissan Micra Tropic."
Why a C63: "Baby and just the one parking space meant the 911 had to go, BMW doesn't do an M3 Touring, and Dan persuaded me into it!"
Loves: "The way it pulls away at any speed, and in any gear, the brakes, the steering, the flared arches, the practicality of the estate..."
Hates: "Driver's seat is too high, and not as comfy as the Porsche's. The interior on mine is a bit dull - the Alcantara in the 507 makes it feel just that bit more special. Grrr."
How do you justify it: "I ride a Brompton everywhere in the week."
What will you replace it with? "F80 M3."

Name: Michael Muniappa (MagicMike)
Current car(s): "2012 C63 Saloon."
Previously owned: "Various cars, all with a story attached!"
Why a C63? "Why not? Tried other cars in the same bracket decided to take the use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut approach."
Loves: "Nothing comes close to the brutal acceleration, beautiful engine and exhaust note, and the fact you don't have to explain anything about the performance if you own one. Everyone knows its capabilities."
Hates: "Fuel consumption and the Mrs always telling me to slow down in it. Also the car has to go, as Mrs becomes primary driver, and finds it too frightening. Our first child is due in November and I really wanted to pick up the newborn in it from the hospital. Can you imagine a future PH thread - 'The car I was brought home from the maternity ward in/first car I ever travelled in" in 20 years time."
How do you justify it to yourself? "I work very hard like most people out there, cars are my only passion and indulgence."
What will you replace it with? "The dilemma faced by all owners at the moment. I'm waiting to see the new C63 and if it's not good enough, I'll opt for a Ferrari California class of vehicle. The California is the only one I've driven so far that gave me the same feelings behind the wheel."

Thanks: A big cheer to all the owners who came along and to our hosts Topcats Racing - sorry about the tyre smoke...

Interesting that none of you Coupe owners mention the F-Type R as a potential replacement. It's the only thing I've driven that sounds anywhere near as good.... it's nowhere near as practical I suppose

All but one owner mentions the noise in there 'likes' list... Sounds good then... smile

I just wish they kept that engine going rather than switching to the turbo. Damn greeness and boring emissions.

In a nutshell the owners like:

"The noise, the engine, the speed"

and

"Dislike almost everything else..."
Build quality, fuel tank, running costs, fuel consumption.

Sniff a good dose of PCP in there...one at £811 p/m yikes!

The seats and steering wheel feel utterly fantastic, nice to drive and with a nice noise. I couldn't quite get away from the 'hotted up C class', it never really branched into something more special but with more time it might have. It preferred it to the contemporary German competition though.

I think we must be the only people in the UK not to lease our C63.

Wish I hadn't been quite as lazy with my responses to Dan's questions now, looking at everyone elses.

Wow is it normal to get ~200 miles to the tank?

I'm getting 17mpg in my V8, and I can drive to and from work all week before a fill up (which is roughly 300 miles) and then it'll take £120 then I'm back on it again.

Looking at getting one of these for the other half (SHE LOVES THEM!) but need to make sure the fuel doesn't become an issue for her...

Yes, quite normal for mixed driving. If you do city driving it will be more like 150 miles. Best I achieved was 360 miles but it was all motorway and VERY boring.

My car goes end of December and I will be gutted, but my plan always centered around the low lease cost (£600 per month for mine) and the impending year 2-3 costs (brakes, expensive services etc.). For the money that I have paid I think it's been amazing, nothing to add to the other reviews and share all the same reasons to love and to justify it!

I've had my fun though, and I now have the AMG addiction.

Sadly my next car won't be an AMG, but I know I will be queuing up to test drive the new one after its launched, and I will be ready to get one after the PCP / lease costs die down after the initial first 2 years.

Wow, 360 miles is a top effort! Was it on fumes at refil time?

My best is about 318miles, and I put 65L in the 66L tank eek

I really covet a Mercedes AMG, mainly for the noise like all these owners. The overbearing thing from this thread though is the phrase "the wife" irked What's wrong with "my wife"?

It was from cold, cruise control 70-75 Nottingham to Heathrow and back, I was keen to do it in one tank to avoid motorway services.

Managed 27mpg too.

It's the one and only time that I've done it haha
