Does anyone know how this affects traders who have taxed cars in stock today? If sold after 1st October, will the tax automatically be refunded to the previous owner?!
Most traders cash in the road tax on vehicles they take in as a matter of course,
No they don't, the cash would be sent to the original owner then, so pointless.

Has been this way for years, unless it has changed very recently.

We already have a sizeable thread on this here - I'm sure there are plenty of others, but that's the first one that came to mind.

Might as well do some cross-posting while I'm here.

Surprised we've got this far without anyone pointing out the problem with making it impossible to transfer tax when selling a vehicle:

If I'm selling a car which I'm using daily, and a chap comes to get it on the 15th of September, I do not get a refund for any of September's tax, only any remaining full months. So I lose two weeks' tax.

As the tax cannot be transferred, the new owner must re-tax the car immediately. Apart from being bloody inconvenient, especially if the sale is not taking place at someone's house, it can still only be done in whole months so he must pay for all of September, again paying for two weeks' extra tax.

Tadaa.. The government gains a month's extra tax. Because the system is online and nearly instant, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that tax could not be handled to the nearest day to avoid such an issue - except, of course, that it would reduce the cost and ballache to the motorist and therefore the profit to the system.

I have just gone to tax my winter 4x4 wanting to use the pay monthly option with a view to only taxing for 3 or 4 months only to discover that the pay monthly option states that the duration of tax is for 12 months .

Does this mean if I cancel the direct debit after 3 months and sorn the vehicle the DVLA will come after me for the remaining 9 payments?

On the other hand you do get charged an extra 5% for monthly DD.
Strange how other major utilities companies actually give discount for paying by Direct Debit as it eases the burden ...... The government... ERM .. No, the exact opposite.

It should also be looked at as an incentive to remove cars from the road when not in use.

Nothing has changed apart from not allowed to sell a car with tax and paying by dd. How people don't understand this is beyond me.
