Lived in S Yorks most of my life and really squirm at the recent negative publicity it gets...

Got a call from the missus today at 1730hrs - her car had ground to a halt, no electrics so hazards inoperable - all I could hear over the phone was the sound of car horns...RAC were uncontactable btw

Gave me the location and 20 mins later I arrived, pulled up behind, some distant back with hazards on - passing motorists - horns,2 fingers, etc, etc

By the way the missus works for a charity and was taking a Downs child back to his foster parents - he was absolutely terrified by the experience.

Congratulations to all you chaps (several hundred) who were delayed by a few secs going home and couldn't be bothered to pull over to see if they could be of assistance...what a pathetic bunch!!

Sheffield City of Sanctuary - I salute you..

Just to clarify - how were they uncontactable? If you had an issue getting through, might be worth tweeting or dropping a polite note to their chief exec's office. They might not be aware of a regional problem of people trying to call them.

So that is your concern then?

No. I can't help fix the whole of South Yorkshire. I grew up in Yorkshire and can empathise.

I was suggesting some constructive help to an issue you outlined which was surprising - that the RAC helpline was completely unavailable for a carer at time of need - and that they might not be aware.

Sorry I bothered. You clearly have as big a chip on your shoulder as the protagonists you reference...

Sheffield, what do you expect?

I live near Doncaster, work in Rotherham & find Sheffield worse for driving a lot of the time.

Apart from the arbitrary road layout (which is intentionally confusing) I generally find Sheffield a decent place to drive.

Where abouts were you?

Nope well balanced thanks - have chip on both shoulders - pleased you picked the least controversial bit of my post to comment on - you will fit in well in Sheffield..

Meadowhall area ..out of townies to blame no doubt...

I've had a similar experience 10+ years ago in South London when my clutch went near a junction. When the AA bloke turned up he got clipped by one car as he bent over to look under the bonnet. aholes will be aholes.

I live is S Yorks and I tell you what cocker, I love nothing better than being back in this county when I've had to travel further afield.

Be thankful it wasn't Manchester or London she broke down in.

So you condone the motorists referred to behaviour?? because elsewhere it would/could be worse?

Had a similar thing a good many years ago. One dead car. Much younger and fitter then though.

Broke down on a roundabout.

Bloke behind me had never heard of "tyres and tarmac". Much sounding of horn and gesticulating.

Got out of car and approached horn-man.

"OK, you start my car and I'll lean on your horn"

3/10 for rant

I picked the bit we could help with. We can't change Sheffield, we might change an issue with the RAC which was something you chose to comment on, so I chose to respond on. Don't want reponses, don't raise an issue.

What do you want from this thread?

Empathy? "There, there, didums we think they are nasty and ill informed plebs as well?"
Vitriol? "RANT ARRRGHHH ALL THE SAME BLOODY SHEFFIELD"
Daily Mail? "It'll be all the immigrants! Check you plunging house prices now on www.dailymailplunginghousepricesduetoimmigrants.co...
Legal advice? "Check your contract. Talk to Breadvan72"
Better car? "<insert PH stereotype here>"

Or reality? Crappy thing happens. Unfixable scenario presented. People offer ideas. OP rants.

Answer. Find a nicer area of Yorkshire to live in. They exist.

Was born in Doncaster, though fortunately may family moved away when I was 2 so had nothing further to do with the place until I moved back to S. Yorks for my first job. Lived in Stocksbridge near Sheffield and the Dearne Valley.

Totally agree with the OP it's a sthole. Thick, ignorant locals. Appalling driving - as a cyclist it was particularly dangerous and unpleasant, but bad enough when driving a car.

The roads in Sheffield resemble the surface of an asteroid and they've got the stupid tram system that runs on the roads everywhere, so the trams get stuck in traffic and the tramlines are a nightmare for cyclists as well as causing cars to skid.

Someone tried to nick my car as soon as I got it (Rover 214 - not exotica), stole the washing off my clothesline. Salt and vinegar were chained to the counter in the local chippie - I kid you not!

Wouldn't go back there if you paid me double....

It is.

Just not that bit. Draw a line East to West about 10 miles north of Leeds and it gets a lot better. wink

Wow.

Quick question. When was the last time you stopped for some random woman stopped at the side of the road?
