Insurance is odd isn't it?
Discussion
I've just updated my address with my insurance for my MINI Cooper S, and i now have to pay another £180 from now until June next year!
I've recently been on all the comparison sites punching in details of an almost endless list of prospective cars to replace the MINI, including Mercedes CLS's, BMW M3's, Golf GTI's, BMW 330i etc etc, and they are all cheaper to insure than the MINI, barring a CLS500!
What i have to do now, is pay £30 to cancel my policy, buy a new car and take out a new policy on a more expensive and powerful car to save myself some cash!
Yeah i know, cool story bro, etc etc.

I struggle to believe that a real M3 would be cheaper, but certainly the others will. It is all down to stats - average claims incidence, average claims cost, difficulty/cost of repairs (labour hours and parts). The data is pooled to produce the ABI vehicle group, which is now 1-50. Insurers can discount or load the rate if they want to avoid certain cars or indeed attract more business. If you like the MINI, keep it and pay up - it's a small part of the overall cost of ownership.I've recently been on all the comparison sites punching in details of an almost endless list of prospective cars to replace the MINI, including Mercedes CLS's, BMW M3's, Golf GTI's, BMW 330i etc etc, and they are all cheaper to insure than the MINI, barring a CLS500!

Admiral wanted another £200 if I said my car was kept in a locked garage overnight, as opposed to being kept on the road outside my house.
It's still bloody obvious which household owns the car (if anyone really wanted to burgle the house for the keys to a couple of grands worth of hatchback...), so I came to the conclusion that lots of people must crash their cars going into/out of their garage. Which is worrying...

The one that got me was getting a quote to add the missus diesel picasso to my policy on a 172 as a multicar thing a few years ago. It added 800quid to a 600 quid policy on the clio, she was paying under 200 on the picasso at the time as well. I never could figure that one out...
Having seen how the average Picasso is driven I think that's quite reasonable.Back to the OP, yes insurance is odd because people are odd I guess. I'd love to see the full stats and figures but I assume a lot of it will be fairly well guarded.

Very odd.
My Rover 25 cost £201 fully comp. Bought a Merc SLK230 Kompressor & it was £200 fully comp. I realise they are both old farts cars but it did seem strange.
I pay £245 with Admiral to insure my Jag (another old fart's car! ), and having had a blast in a Gallardo yesterday on a driving experience, thought it would be amusing to see how much it would cost to insure one. The cheapest quote was from Quote Me Happy, who did just that, with £347! I nearly fell out of my chair. All I need to do now is double my mortgage to buy one. Sadly 'she' says no.
