I'm thinking of buying a new car (new to me, that is, probably about 5 years old max), but I'm really struggling to think of anything sensible (need space for dive gear, so a saloon, hatch, small estate will do) that I'd actually want...

To be honest, I can only really say that an Audi S3 appeals.

When I bought my RX8 6 years ago, I struggled too (I didn't have the need for anything practical then beyond 4 usable seats).

I don't know if I'm just bored with cars or the mainstream models are mostly terminally dull.

That said, I'd agree that cars are much better quality these days (most cars even as late as the 80s probably only ran reliably for a 3 or 4 years without work and rust was a common problem on cars as young as 5 years - Or 5 weeks if you bought Italian!), they just don't seem to be a lot of fun...

Best car I've ever driven, though, is a current model!

M.

And where are these great innovations? Lifeless steering, crashy ride on daft profile tyres, throttles with laggy response and the crowning turd auto boxes. I get to drive a fair few new motors and they just don't do it for me. Obviously the target audience is going to care a fair amount about cup holders and Bluetooth integration, personally I'd take a smidge more ability in dynamics than 'fluff'

There is little of interest in the current line up from either Mercedes or BMW if you don't want a diesel and don't want to 'invest' more than 28K. The obvious answer is what I have already done. A Caterham to drive and a 'whatever' to do all the boring things.

Returning home yesterday from the airport I tried to find a car that I could see which I actually desired, you know wanted rather appreciated. The following is a list from my entire 3hr traffic jam from Gatwick;

Cayman
Old SL320
E90 M3
Fiat 500 Abarth

The only one new I fancy would be a little more than 28K. So where are all these new cars which you speak of......
