I do use driveways to turn around but in fairness I have never damaged and never would damage anyone else's property. I couldn't care less if people use mine as long they don't damage the vehicles in it.

It's a shame that so many people ignore the fact the the OP's wall and wife's car have been damaged.

All because somebody is too lazy or incompetent to do an easy three point turn where the street is standard width.

It's an even bigger shame how many people are trying to put him down for worrying about future damage, because it's something they like to do and therefore don't have a problem with it.

That's PH for you. laugh

I would never enter the curtilage of a property to turn round but surely a drive/gateway outside the boundary is acceptable?

If there had never been damage then there's surely no problem with it.

However as the Op has had damage twice then the idea sets in that every car is capable of causing damage.

It's probably the anticipation more than the actual act that annoys.
Well, it's mainly this. The drive is on a downwards slope and I remember watching one woman pull into my drive, attempt to select reverse but in doing so re-selected first and then went forwards down the drive towards my car, all whilst looking backwards. Fortunately she was quick enough on the brakes to stop but it's the anticipation of knowing that a large proportion of drivers are utterly crap at actually driving.

The other side of it is just me being territorial, which it seems is something that some people agree with and some don't. If my drive was long and sweeping I wouldn't be bothered, but as it's just over one car in length and my living room is at the end of it it just really annoys me that someone basically invades my privacy and looks straight into my 'castle'. Hey ho.

Edit: Just to add, these people are pulling alongside my car, effectively down the full length of my driveway. I barely trust my wife enough to pull out of the drive without clipping my bumper, let alone strangers.

What percentage of the driving public do you think are incapable of a simple reverse three-point turn in a drive without hitting a car or wall? And not just gently nudging a wall, but hitting it hard enough to do damage?

If you're SO worried about that, I suggest you sell your car, because you sure as hell won't be willing to park it in public anywhere...

It always makes me chuckle when you see a "NO TURNING" sign on somebody's gate. It's a sure indicator that the person living there is probably staring out from behind the net curtains, just waiting for any excuse to turn purple and risk a coronary. The highlight of their day, probably.
This is spot on. Smacks of a petty "little England" homeowner. A "No Parking" sign I get, but "No Turning"? Really? Someone's missed a turn, entered the wrong sat nav info or simply got lost and you don't want to help a fellow out by turning around cos it's your property?

Now, this doesn't apply to the OP who (I guess) hasn't got a sign, but people turning around on my drive doesn't bother me (living as we do at the end of a cul de sac).

Different mater if damage is caused...

A foot wide trench with hidden spikes, just wide enough for the tyres to drop onto the spikes, and an electrically operated sliding cover. You stand behind the curtains and press the button as they start their reverse.

That should work.

This. I am capable of a 3 point turn.

There's a house opposite my kids school, which has quite a wide but private driveway. (6 foot walls either side of the opening)

One particular woman used to park her people carrier there most mornings, reverses right up this persons driveway leaving the car fully parked on someone else's property.

I always assumed they knew each other and had some sort of arrangement.

It transpires she didn't know the owners, just felt she was entitled to park there because she is too lazy to park round the corner.

One morning there was much amusement when the owner hadn't left at his usual early hour for work, and noticed the car being parked on his driveway.
He waited until she had crossed the road and went into the school.

Then he closed his gates (6 foot high to match the wall height, heavy metal too) and secured them with a chain and padlock.

The driver got in quite a strop, threatened the police etc. he pointed out it was his private property then told her it was "inconvenient" to unlock his gates at this moment, and that she should return after he had finished his breakfast and his morning paper.

True to his word he returned to his house and shut the door, leaving this woman on the footpath shouting through the gates.

I didn't have time to hang around to see how long he made her wait but it made my morning and she hasn't parked there since!

Absolutely!
I've seen the "PRIVATE ROAD NO TURNING" signs, but bugger it, If I've ended up in the wrong place, I'm going to turn round.
The only reason it is a problem is some people choose to get upset about it.

Why would I sell my car? Are you high?

On this same page there's a thread about people sitting on cars for photos along with the expected outrage. What's the difference? Not every selfie causes paint damage, so surely that's ok.

Someone attempted to turn round using my drive last week, knocking down a portion of my garden wall in the process. Of course, they quickly drove off without leaving any details.

Just watched the video. Sounds like you are masturbating while watching the gates?

Perhaps if you follow the words with your finger as you read them, you might understand.

If you really believe the vanishingly small risk of people demolishing your garden wall whilst turning is worth getting so excited about, what do you think when you leave your car in the supermarket car park or the street?

rofl

All these ideas for setting a trap for unsuspecting motorists are quite bizarre.

Personally I'd never drive on to someone's drive to turn round but would use the pavement via the drop curb.

I wouldn't use a pavement for turning round never mind somebodies driveway. It's plain rude to drive onto somebodies drive and incompetent if you have to use the pavement.

I'll put my nose /rear into a drive entrance to compete a 3 point turn without it turning into a 5 point turn.

I've been in positions in big vehicles where it was much safer to half reverse into someone's driveway to spin round, rather than reverse 3 miles down a single track road.

I'd never do it if I could avoid it, but if I have to, I will.

I'm sure, like the OP, some people live in locations where it may become a frequent issue.

If you have had property damaged, a set of gates or a bollard would be your best bet, a 'no turning' sign would act as bait to some.
