Turning around in someone else's driveway

I accidentally turned into someone's private drive last week. Thinking it was the entrance to the holiday cottage we were staying in I knocked on their door to complain that someone had blocked the drive with their car, only to be told I should be next door and it was his car.
Rather than storming off to PH, he moved his car further down the drive so I could turn around instead of reversing out onto the road.
All this at gone 10pm.
To be honest I was chuffed at how nice he was. And I'd guess he gets it a fair bit as the house and cottage have similar names.

On the one hand I can see you being unhappy, especially if you have suffered damage, on the other it's never a good idea to reverse onto a main road, unless you can't help it.
How often does it happen? If it's twice a day I would chill out a bit.

Gates or a chain on the driveway?
There's a driveway near me in an obvious turning spot with a chain across it. Of course the question is whether the annoyance of people using your driveway to turn round is outweighed by the inconvenience of having to remove and replace the chain every time you want to use the drive.John D. said:

All these ideas for setting a trap for unsuspecting motorists are quite bizarre.
Personally I'd never drive on to someone's drive to turn round but would use the pavement via the drop curb.

Seriously- it's a problem ( if you can call it that) ,we see regularly in our narrow street. It's not a dead end, but some folk decide to use someone's drop kerb to turn , as it makes for a faster ( and in this area ,safer, as we have a lot of myopic young drivers around) turn round.
I used to live in a modern townhouse in a cul-de-sac, each house had two parking spaces out front, I used one, the other a spare for visitors. This cul-de-sac was diagonally opposite a no right turn junction, so people would turn left out of the junction, spin it into our road, drive onto somebody's empty parking space, reverse, leave and carry on down the road that the no left turn had prevented them going down.
All day long we'd get f
kwits doing this, the most annoying thing being that you could easily turn the average hatchback in the road alone, so wide it is, absolutely no need to go driving over other people's land. Nope, these dheads just steamed in doing whatever they liked. I finally cracked and went out to remonstrate with some fool, to find him pissed and drinking a can of Stella at the wheel! Some serious verbals were exchanged, followed by a call to dob him in to the BiB from me.
People who do this kind of thing are of the mistaken view that they are the only ones doing it, so it's no problem. They're not. When all comers are having a go, all times of day and night it soon pisses you off. I eventually moved away, and now have a driveway so secluded that no bugger troubles us.

The simple fact is that it is your property. How would others feel if the general public walked across their front lawn to access another public footpath? Let your children play in somebody else's front garden? If the no harm is done argument is all it is about then people would be making use of another person's land and property whenever they want. Then also what is wrong with leaning on somebody else's car or placing your handbag on their car? Afterall, they will surely be just as careful and not intend to damage your car. People should respect what is clearly somebody else's space, land and property. If you want to use it, ask first.

Apparently it's ok for people to let their cat st in your garden so I can't see the big deal about using a drive to turn their car. I accept taking a dump on the drive mid turn might be a step too far though. st or turn seems to be ok, but not both.9mm said:
