My understanding on the mobile phone issue was that it caused interference with some of the old flow measurement systems in the pumps - i.e. using your mobile could mean that you were charged for more/less petrol than was supplied. I didn't think it was anything to do with the phones themselves - presumably if it was, then you'd be asked to switch your phone off completely before entering the forecourt (rather than just not using it). Or for that matter, before driving anywhere!
I always thought the main issue with phones in petrol stations was idiots filling up while concentrating on the phone/texting/Facebook/#Imsoakedinunleaded and spraying fuel everywhere.

What the OP is saying about the older RX8's all having the hot start issues on original components isn't true. Some are still going fine.

In Italy they smoke while filling up. I have been in a car where the attendant was filling up and had a fag hanging out his mouth. The one near Naples used to regularly do this although not seen it for two years now. The one in the village down the amalfi coast were still smoking last year.
Not using a mobile phone at the same time though? That'd be some multi-tasking! hehe

Why can't we get jobless people becoming petrol pump attendees. I'd happily pay a quid for someone to full up my car for me and then pay chip and win through my car window..

cayman R's weight savings make a big difference and the cars are amazing but someone fills up their tank to half to save weight and it's pointless and retarded

what's wrong with you ?
Because he thinks it saves him 4mpg? And he has to drive to the petrol station twice as much, AND THEN HE LEAVES HIS FARKING CAR IDLING WHEN HE FILLS UP!? It is most definitely pointless and retarded.

I had a Lexus company car as an interim daily driver and used to forget to switch off the engine all the time at petrol stations because it was so quiet. Did it quite a lot when it was sunny and I couldn't see the instruments that well. Then I'd get back in the car and try to start it when it was already running.... screeeech!
You leave the keys in all the time you're filling and paying? I didn't think anyone actually did that! eek

Although it's just occurred to me that the OP does of course... getmecoat
Pay at pump or if there are people in the car. If I'm own my own of course the keys come out.

On a side note, I can't help thinking that the raison d'etre of the RX8 - the rotary engine - was also its downfall. If it had a decent 2.0 turbo or a V6, and thus a reasonable life expectancy then I would have bought one instead of my Clubman.

Indeed.

If it hadn't had a rotary, I wouldn't have bought one.

^ coming from someone whos probably never even driven an RX8. Look why am I the one getting persecuted for the previous owner not looking after the car properly. My original question was asking whether I could leave the engine running while filling up. And I've got my answer now so as far as I'm concerned this thread might as well be closed.

Coming from someone who bought an early one a year old and kept it for over three years, including having the starter upgraded under warranty, he's right, it's codswallop.

Your just full of TrueFacts, aren't you?

If only I could own a rotary powered car, I might become a little more enlightened as to what their foibles are. Sadly, 'tis but a distant dream.

Let us know when you get the results of that compression test, huh?

Sod the compression test. There's loads of videos on youtube where people have put the uprated starter in and done like 200 miles and turned the car off, and it starts straight up again. That's good enough for me. Besides, if it has lost compression, I hardly notice it. The acceleration is like nothing else I've ever driven so I'm not bothered.

The uprated starter will warm start a failing engine.

For a while.

It's excellent condition with 60k miles. But ALL older models of RX8's have the hot start problem. Even when brand new. Google search will let ya know
They don't, thats bks, looking through your other posts in the thread you've clearly got all your rotary knowledge from an unreliable and misunderstood source.

I thought you said your car was in excellent condition wink.

You've bought a dud - most of them on the market are duds though - £700 is a bargain but there is no chance its going to be a good example.

hehe The acceleration is underwelming. The 8 is great apart from its inability to accelerate quickly, not only is it slow but it doesn't even feel fast! Lovely sound though!

I'm actually looking forward to hearing more about your RX-8 in the future. We should do a poll on how long until it dies.

There is no such thing as a cheap sports car!*
*Well, MX-5

What else have you driven out of interest. The one I drove in 2005 didn't have much guts. And it was 6 months old. I liked it though, just can't afford/justify the running costs.

Don't argue with this 21 year old.

hehe I like the part where the OP says there is also a 2.6L version after someone corrected him saying it's a 1.3!

It's hilarious seeing someone know so little after thinking they know so much. We've all been there at one stage though.
