more intrigued by the GGR 240 horse fiesta in fairness.

I assume that retains the factory warranty? makes it a right little pocket rocket

The ride was awful in the last one on UK roads - I hope they've improved that.

It's a bit crazy how fast cars are getting these days. When I bought my S13 200SX, its 6.7 0-60 time seemed quite impressive for the cash; now it's matched by a bloody Polo! That said, I don't think cars are getting any more fun to drive, in fact quite the opposite sadly.
Oh perhaps it is you that is getting older and more sensible and you are looking back at the fun times you had in your youth with 200SX.

That engine, with supercharger and turbocharger did put me off. Too complex, it was in a super mini for godsake, not a Group B 1 of 200 road cars. Add the DSG gearbox and you were looking at rather large bills 2nd hand....

This is more like it. The Polo will be more similar and in size to the Mk2 Golf Gti and the simple 1800cc engine turbo'd would be ripe for tuning I bet. It has 200 cc over the Mini / Clio/ ST / 208 etc for a start.

Good question about how it drives though, the last one was competent but not party time if I recall.
The same ish engine in the Leon FR has 180bhp but the torque wound back to 185lbft. This maps to 235bhp and 240lbft.

The polo starting with better numbers in the first place will have really impressive numbers after a map. Most likely even more than the Goode tune on the Fiesta.

Most of VAG's petrol turbos seem to have diesel levels of torque nowadays.

I guess this is vw admitting that the twin charged 1.4 engine is actually pretty crap?

I agree, apart from the fact the Cooper S now uses a 2L engine, so it is in fact .02L down on the Mini

This is defiantly starting to become a golden era of hot hatches, with most of them becoming so good/quick/capable, a lot of bigger and more expensive stuff is starting to look pretty vulnerable I reckon. Long live affordable performance biggrin

Used to own the 6n2 polo gti with 125bhp (same engine as the Lupo Gti). Lovely warm hatch but it was too heavy and that made the handling sloppy. A mate ofmine in a mk2 Mazda 2 could easily out handle it on country roads.

Looked at the mk2 Fabia Vrs but auto only put me off so got the 1.2 tsi 105 bhp again warm hatch.

The new Polo Gti doesn't excite me and for about the same money I would get a MCS.

I'm sure this will be a great car in a lot of ways but I really cannot see it being as fun as the fiesta st to drive which is a shame from a "premium" brand that used to make such fun cars. I genuinely hope its good this time around

Going back to a manual gearbox and dumping that tfsi engine is the best news I've heard all week.

Now to get vw to produce that Up GTI. That is the car I am waiting for.

With a manual available again and that comparably simple 1.8, this looks a lot more interesting than the current model (that, as others said, has a lot of big bork potential).

New one also going to get a very safe and boring set up, as usual with VAG these days. But it is also looks the most grown up of the hot hatches and will certainly a capable all rounder. I wish this had the handling of the Fiesta or the Fiesta had the less brash styling of the Polo...

yes The price will probably have me looking elsewhere i. a used M135i.
I agree. I know the anti-compare new-to-used brigade gets very upset with this and start quoting extreme examples to make their point, whatever it is.

But I always compare new to used like 1-2 year old cars that will have similar overall ownership/running cost. And that's a very good example. I expect 18 month old low mileage 3-dr to dip under the £20k mark privately by xmas.

So it's a "segment" above ? I don't give a shyte, I am not in marketing, I just drive the thing.

Great news that the dreadful Twincharger engine has gone. A good mate of mine is a Skoda tech, and reckons they replace two Fabia vRS engines a week at his dealership alone for excessive oil consumption, often finding the replacement engines are no better. They also have a problem with pistons coking up due to a design fault with the injectors, and crank bearing failures in as little as 20,000 miles. Crap engine by his account, and he knows his stuff.
Bcensoredt. I doubt they have sold more than 300 of those Fabias a year for some time, so whatever issues the engine has, I can't see one dealership replacing 100 engines a year. If they were, I'm sure we would have heard about it from a more reliable source than your good mate.

I really like the look of this. The underpinnings are maybe a little old now but its still a solid hot hatchback and notably improved on before.

It hasn't been a particularly strong engine as far as reliability and longevity goes, we won't be seeing it anymore once the Audi A1 and SEAT Ibiza applications are phased out.

Awaiting the S1's cousin, the Polo R. But this looks quick enough to be honest, albeit a very 'electronic' drive if the Golf is anything to go by.

As others have said for fans of smaller, faster hatchbacks or VW fans this is good news, piled on top of more good news, with an extra side of good news.
