I watched that vid on my phone and to be honest, it was quite hard to hear anything over and above normal road noise.

Would posting videos of your dodgy car up on Vx FB page get any attention??
I never thought of that there's no harm in trying

Did you leave it in gear when you dipped the clutch or did you put it in neutral?
Leave it in gear, does that point to final drive bearings?

I haven't watched your vid yet because I have no sound where I am, but from what you've said I think it may not be the gearbox at all. Those gearboxes have three shafts, two of those shafts are constantly connected to the differential/wheels so always turning when the car is moving clutch dipped or not, if it's in gear all three shafts will be turning in relation to the wheels/diff. I wouldn't expect a worn bearing/revolving shaft symptom noise to disappear when the clutch is dipped.

Also I believe there is possibly an official revised oil level amount with at least some of the F40s, something about stubborn/notchy gear changes being resolved by dropping the oil level from 3.2 litres to 2.4 litres, but that is only something I've read & have no experience with.

I will watch the vid later when I get home.

Ok I've got a bit of an update on this. Yesterday I dropped it off at the second dealer again and told them I'd leave it with them for a few days. Today I got a call from the dealership and they said that they've checked the gearbox oil and they've found metallic like particles in the oil. From the sounds of it I may finally be getting somewhere as they are wanting to do some further investigation. I'm guessing strip the box down? The dealer has said they're in communication with Vauxhall and that Vauxhall are wanting to see the service history for the car. I did say that the gearbox isn't even serviced so any service history shouldn't make a difference regardless but the guy said with it being a £2,000 part if it's going to come to them replacing the gearbox they want to see the service history. Up to now the car should have 3 stamps in the book as it has just turned 3 years old. The second service was done by Stoneacre just before I bought the car and I've just had the third service done by a garage last week, but I've just realised there isn't a stamp for the first service. So I rang up Stoneacre and they've managed to dig up an oil and filter change that was done at Kwik-Fit in Newbury at 21,000 miles and emailed me over some paperwork. I emailed all invoices/paperwork that I have for the 3 services now to the dealership and they've said that they've passed it on to Vauxhall and they're going to give me a update tomorrow.

Curious about the oil and filter change that was done at Kwik-Fit I rang them up and asked about any service history they have on record of my car's reg., the guy on the end of the line confirmed that they did an oil and filter change at 21,000 miles but mentioned that they don't have a name on record of person who they serviced it for, and instead (and perhaps more worryingly than anything) it just says "car enterprise".

Does this now point to my car being an ex-rental? If so am I right in that the dealership that I bought it from has broken the law in failing/omitting to tell me that it was an ex-rental. If it is an ex-rental I'm not very happy about it.

I just found this article online.

Well now you have a dealer on your side at last. Asking for service history is just a standard operating procedure - it happens for all warranty claims. What is the service schedule for the car ? does the extra history you've found mean it has been serviced according to the schedule ?

From reading that link its unclear to me exactly what the seller must/must not do. Obviously they aren't allowed to mislead a customer but do they need to volunteer information ?
I reckon much of this will come down to the interpretation of "one owner" - If the only owners of a vehicle are a rental company then it could be regarded as "one owner" - its factually correct, but probably not what the customer would expect.

It could be its an ex lease (i.e. company) car ? I would assume car enterprise do that too ?

If the previous owner is a rental company it seems strange that they'd use Kwik Fit to service the car, I would expect them to have their own workshops or a contract with someone to do it ?

You could write to the DVLA, asking for the history on the car?

From what I can find online the service intervals are 20,000 miles so it does seem that it's been serviced more or less on time, so hopefully I'll be getting some good news tomorrow especially when you take into account that the gearbox isn't serviced.

And I had actually been planning to write to the DVLA before, but I think I definitely am going to now just to see what it brings up I think it could prove interesting.

Dealer rang me again today to say that they are still in the process of communicating with and sending all the details over to Vauxhall. They have had the car since Wednesday and they are saying that they're are going to need to keep the car over the weekend with the condition that the gearbox is in. They said they weren't willing to offer me a courtesy car and they gave me a lift home when I brought the car in on Wednesday. I was ok being without my car for a couple of days but now on Monday I need to travel around 20-25 to miles at 7:30 in the morning to get to a course I am doing. On the phone earlier I asked if they'd be able to give me a courtesy car now given the circumstances and they said that they were still unwilling to offer me a courtesy car and wouldn't be able to anyway since they're all booked up, and that it's my responsibility to travel around.

Personally if the car was only going to be in for a day I'd think fair enough but this is the third day today and they're keeping it for another 3+ days including Monday. I'm glad they're finally doing something about it but with all the trouble I've already had with them and other dealers anyway it's stupid that they won't sort anything out since it is warranty work. I've even checked public transport which would involve getting several buses and a 2 hour+ journey, but I've checked and the buses don't run this early in the morning anyway. I've checked the price of a taxi there and back and it's just unfeasibly expensive and family will be working.

Is there nothing else I can do about this?

Until vauxhall authorise it its not warranty work, and courtesy cars get booked up quite quickly so genuinely they may have none available.

Just got a call from the dealership, Vauxhall have authorised the warranty work so they've ordered a new gearbox. Now just waiting for it to be delivered and fitted. As for getting a courtesy car I complained about it over the weekend and am waiting for a call back from the area manager.

Hi looking for some help on gearbox issue
I bought a 2010 Astra in April , the car is automatic and has now done 30,000 miles. It has just been into Vauxhall who say the car needs a new gearbox which will cost us £6275 !!!!!
It was out of warranty with Vauxhall in September , any helpful advice greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Speak to Vauxhall customer services for a goodwill application. If you've bought it privately and/or it doesn't have a full Vauxhall service history, don't hold much hope...

Alternatively speak to a local transmission specialist, they'll be able to overhaul it for far less.

I only scanned this thread so forgive me if this is not relevant. If the car has a highish mileage form what it costs you might want to consider getting a new clutch chucked in while the box is out anyway. Might save you a few quid in labour later especially if the current clutch has had some hammer while fighting with the duff box.

6275 quid for an auto box? Wow!

Not much help I'm afraid I just can't believe how much the box costs for what's a very mundane vehicle.

A quick google suggests around £1000 inc vat to supply and fit a recon unit, shop around it will probably be less. Even a brand new one wont be anything like the money they are asking.

What exactly is wrong with it ? Might just need a fluid change.
