I'm looking to get a 2nd hand diesel hatchback. I drive a lot for work so need something very economical, preferably a manual but wouldn't mind automatic and between 1.6 and 2.2. I have a budget of between £6 - 9,000.

At the moment, I'm considering an Audi A3 2.0 or the slightly newer 1.6. Honda Civic 2.2 i-VTEC or possibly 2.0 BMW 1 series. I have considered a Golf but it didn't wow me.

Any suggestions or advice will go a long way! I know very little about cars! Most importantly is to have something that does great mileage and Im also in my mid 20's so not too heavy on insurance would be useful.

Thanks!

1 series or 3 series 120D? Just stay away from 2007-2009 cars in the 1 series as they seem to have a lot of issues.

Mazda 3 2.2D 185? Sport trim is the one to go for.

Golf mk6 2.0 TDI 140. Its a good all round engine that's pretty reliable.

I've just bought an '09 A3 DSG 170. The CR engine is much better than the the older PD and I really like the gearbox. It's a comfy car for the motorway too, having done about 1500 miles in the last 2 weeks.
