Evening all. Just got back from France/Belgium this evening. On the A16 coming back from Belgium i witnessed an idiot on the other side of the road driving along shining a green laser pointer at the cars on the other side (my travelling direction) of the carriageway. Whats the worse that could happen ? do they really blind you? why the fk would you do such a stupid thing. I checked my dash cam footage just now but can't find it,maybe its a combo of both rubbish weather and cheap chinese made st dash cam.

What a tt! Those green lasers can do permanent damage. I should know, had it done to me - I now have a permanently grey spot in my eye, luckily it's only small and not smack bang in the middle of my vision. Thankfully, it's not and too noticeable. I looked away the second I saw the beam, but could of been alot worse.

I have experienced this too, it was quite a powerful green laser where the beam could be seen quite a distance away. It was shined as I went past into my rear view mirror and it did go into my eyes briefly.

I was thinking that night that my eye was hurting but it might have just been in my head. However after reading it up a little bit , my understanding is that as long as its not prolonged exposure you should be fine and your eye would recover.

Seeing as these lasers are so cheap and readily available I am surprised that there are not more of these idiots doing this kind of stuff for fun.

Hope your alright!

Not necessarily: there are some dangerously powerful lasers, available over the counter/mail order, that could cause lasting damage (especially at relatively close range).

I hope it wasn't one , I would think the OP would know by now if it were.

I did a gig (musician) in a town square one Christmas a few years ago, small bunch of musicians, background music, booked by the council to create a nice atmosphere for the Christmas market. Some bell end on one of the stalls kept shining one in our eyes - he thought he was being subtle about it but of course you could see exactly where it was from. When he approached he said he didn't want us there as it was affecting business (even though we were drawing crowds into the square). Words were had; told him to talk the council about it as we were doing what we'd been told. But what an utter cock.

Probably a ruse to get people to stop so immigrants can jump in your car. Blooming hundreds round the port area last week!

I'm ok,don't think it was a stop your car rouse as he was moving along the road as well, what a stupid thing to do. Maybe he got bored of throwing paving slabs off of bridges and went hi tecfrown

Most laser pens are class 1 and are not particularly focused so the blink response of the eye will protect the eye. It is a very stupid and dangerous thing to do so should be reported to the local police.

Note: UK has recently introduced a specific law against shining these things at aircraft. Stupid muppets were trying to blind the pilots on approach...

Article 222 of the Air Navigation Order 2009 – states: A person must not in the United Kingdom direct or shine any light at any aircraft in flight so as to dazzle or distract the pilot of the aircraft. It came into effect on 1st January 2010.

The police have had a problem with people shining lasers at police helicopters. There are ways of increasing the power of low powered ones.
