Some advice here would be appreciated.

With the new VED almost upon us I'm confused about how selling my car might work. It's going to my brother and it is taxed until the end of December. I'll have the change of ownership completed and in the post before the end of this month, but I'll also want to put the car on SORN as he won't be insuring it until mid-October. (It will be on private land though, so no issues there).

My question is this: When he does insure it, and put it onto the road again, will the tax disc still be valid?

If not, then I assume that I might as well return the disc for the appropriate refund, and leave him to tax it at the appropriate time.

Thanks all.

When you put it on SORN, it is not taxed any more, therefore your second question will not exist.

Quite hehe

You can't declare SORN while the tax is in effect, so when declaring SORN you either include the disc to get a refund, or you forfeit the remaining amount and have to pay again when putting it back on the road.

OK that's fine then. At least I know how to proceed.

So taxing a car cancels the SORN then? That seems fine but if someone insures a car on the day that they also want to tax it, DVLA won't instantly know about the insurance. If that's the case how does someone tax the car? Can it still be done at a Post Office after 1st October?

(Sorry for asking, this stuff doesn't seem to be easy to find at DVLA).

Cheers all.

they stopped checking insurance several months ago, it's no longer a requirement to have insurance to tax a vehicle except in northern ireland

Although it is an offence to have a taxed vehicle without insurance.

Which wasn't even a question being asked.

You'd think the basics of SORN would have been understood after 16 years, wouldn't you?

You certainly would. Seems not though. *le sigh*
