I actually enjoy the lack of low down torque (to a point..), it gives the car a split personality. Comfy lethargic family car, or 8000rpm screamer when I want it.
There are times when I want more low down torque, but all it takes is a (very satisfying) gear change to access the true potential.
Truth be told, I am very seriously considering turboing my car, given the excellent gains available, it would make the car much more flexible 'in gear' with a conservative low boost, but properly sorted setup. I have read about people using the setup I'm looking at having use able boost by 2,500rpm It would also give me a ~80% power increase at the top end. Win win.
I can appreciate the OP's dislike for the peaky engine characteristics, but can't say I feel the same way. I love my engine (more so for how well it responds to booooost, admittedly) .
