Of course it's my fault you dullard. Re-read the bit in my original post where I admit my own ineptitude.

Although I can pretty much put money on the fact that someone has killed themselves in a Celica somewhere at some point.
You're not making things better for yourself with this post.

People need to get a grip, some days 100hp is deemed too dangerous when millions of people drive a car with less than 50hp, here we are having to entertain the idea that a 190hp car with a 6 speed gearbox is dangerously slow since you are not using it correctly.

Much like smaller engined bikes you need to use all the revs which can be helped by block changing down when you want to overtake - learn what the top speeds are in each gear, look at the speed you are doing in each gear at 5000-6000rpm and start working from there.

38 posts and nobody has suggested the blindingly obvious.

335d remapped will solve all of your problems, OP. Auto + monster torque ensures Blackbird-like overtaking, almost. And I'm almost being serious...

Downshifting and revving the engine out is part of the charm of these types of cars. The original post sounds odd, because it sounds like you bought a boat and realized "I need to put this thing in water before I can use it?!".

if only there was some way to change into another gear
some sort of gear shifter
I did notice some sort of stick poking up between the driver and passenger but have left it alone.

Witchcraft, I tell you.

look at a supercharger? I'm sure they are available for that engine and should improve power lower down the rev range.
FFS this is completely unnecessary.

OP just needs to put his foot down.

It does indeed. Mea culpa.

He did put his foot down - in fifth gear at 60mph, and in a 1.8 petrol. As expected nothing happened.

So, just to be clear (my own lack of driving skills accepted) none of you have ever fked up an overtake?

Really?

You're not getting stick for fking up an overtake, you're getting stick for blaming the car.

All I can see as a problem is you not knowing the capabilities of the car and trying overtakes when you shouldn't.

There's a lot of smaller cars out there that aren't dangerous.
Typical internet forum - chap makes post about subject, first reply tells him that he is a muppet in a polite manner. whistle
understandign the torque and power curves of the vehicles you drive is part of driving them well rather than just beeing a steering wheel / handlebar operative ....

usual story on this is the people who having been used to transit v6 and Sherpa V8 ambulances were faced with their the iveco daily or Renault master and decried them as 'st' and 'gutless' despite them having similar power outputs and more torque ... they were ignoring the truck style 'green band' on the iveco's rev counter and trying to rev it ...

Having ridden a Blackbird, I'd still want to be changing down on one of those too.

As others have already said, use the gearbox. To accelerate from 60 to overtake you want to be in 3rd, of course 5th is going to be disappointing. If you want instant punch from cruising at 60mph in top without changing gear you need many more litres of displacement, an automatic gearbox or a big diesel engine. A small capacity NA petrol screamer is clearly not going to deliver this.

There is no level of performance which is dangerous, only dangerous drivers.

As with most car 'problems', it is the nut behind the steering wheel that requires a little adjustment.

the irony of this thread is that the motorbike has less torque

celica 190
180.44 N·m (133.09 lb·ft) @ 6800 rpm

honda blackbird seems to vary a bit by year, but this is the highest quote i could find
124 Nm (91.5 ft-lbs) @ 7500 rpm

I have the 190. Yes, it doesn't have much torque in 5th and 6th, but It has lots of go once you drop down a gear or two. The car likes to rev to get to the power.

I have the same engine in my Elise.

You need to be up at 5K before considering an aggressive overtake.
2nd cam cut in about 6.2 iirc.

Assuming the ECU is the same you can get the cam change point lowered to about 5.7 which I'm told makes it an easier drive but you don't get the acceleration you do with the higher cam setting.

At 60mph with that engine you should be in 3rd gear to perform a overtake, Rev it til the limiter that's what they love doing.
