As mentioned earlier, anything with a 3 pot really. I wonder if anyone has ever tuned an Aygo? Strictly for the sound you understand, no point trying to get any significant power out of one!

The old fashioned 4A engine in the older Corolla used to sound pretty good, as does the 1.8 Mazda unit found in the 323F.

I only know this as I have had both! Pretty much anything Japanese from the late eighties onwards isn't too bad, must be the early adoption of 16 valves and high revving setups over there.

On the eight valve side the Ford SOHC/Pinto/Whatever else you want to call it, used to sound pretty good - but again it had a very high rev limit. In fact it still does for such a crude design.

Wife's Kia Picanto sounds surprisingly good, 3 cylinder magic again.

When the original Daewoo Matiz came out with a tiny 3 cyl engine even that sounded good , I remember it was almost indestructible to revs too.

A car from back in the day, Corsa GSI With a drilled air box. People believed it had a v6 conversion from the vectra gsi that was had before.

I'm sure Banzai magazine had a competition running years and years ago to give away a supercharged one.

They sound like someone being strangled out the factory. Not a pleasant experience to rev out in mine. Although the spectacularly awful gearing is a factor of that since it seems to take about a year to go from 5000 rpm to 6000 rpm in 2nd.

Fiesta Ecoboost 3 cyl jobby. Sounds very nice and you'll get 35mpg even if you thrash it around everywhere.

I'm probably talking through my arse here as I have no idea what size the engine is, and it certainly won't stop the OP speeding biggrin, but I was following a MINI "John Cooper Works" on the M62 a while back, and it sounded unreal - all sorts of pops and bangs. Truly mental.

Aygo on its limits. I love driving them because they really are like go-karts. The fun factor is driving it on its limits!
Except when you go over 80mph and it feels like the front end is lifting and/or the steering has broken hehe

I love the sound of the TU5J2 in the 106 Rallye. It was so lumpy at low revs and made a lovely noise as it came on cam. Being an 8v it was tuned to give it's punch at higher revs and the exhaust and intake overlap at low revs sounded great. It was the way the grumbling noise coalesced into a gruff bark at about 4000rpm that got me.

How small is small? The 1.6l Toyota 4AGE is an utterly wonderful engine, especially with a cone filter inches behind your head in an AW11. I really miss that car frown The noise when the TVIS does it's thing is brilliant.

Mazda's 1.6 asw found in the MK1/2 MX5 also has a lovely warble through a filter at about 4k.

If you're allowed slightly larger then of course there's the B18whateveritis in the DC2 Integra - Proper VTEC, such harsh engagement and a real growl.

And yeah, the 1.3l Rotary biggrin

Small engine, with big engine fuel economy. In fact I think my mates 5.0 32V Porsche 928 is more economical. So surely defeats the point of having a small engine!

Agreed-K-Series sounds great with decent induction and exhaust mods. Even better with ITB's...

The triple in my OH's C1 sounds good in a cute, endearing sort of way-I'd love to supercharge it.

The fiat 500 abarths sound amazing for a 1.4 tbh. In paris at the moment and its probably the most common car i've seen and the noise is making me want one big time. Sound glorious bouncing off the tall buildings.
