So they remap the ECU parameters which control the EGR valve then. OK - makes sense now.

Many enthusiasts have blanked the EGR and deleted it from the ECU altogether.

Right...

dropped the car off and with all your piss taking, its actually very clever what they do.

German cars are setup to be "greener" due to the laws in germany in regards to emissions, the UK laws are not as strict as germanys. The car is factory setup to reuse some of the exhaust emissions to 1. lower the emissions coming out the exhaust, and 2. to reuse in the engine as air to spark the combustion.

What they do is lower the range which is allowed within the BMW software to make allowances for different countries regulations. So in doing this, they let more clean new air into the engine which reduces the amount of fuel being used as its got more air to cause the spark, in doing so, increasing the MPG and getting a cleaner sounding engine due to not using dirty air.

Comments please.
Sounds like your NOx emissions will be going up.

The law is the same whether the car is sold in Germany or the UK.

Aren't the emissions laws set by EU thus they should be the same for all countries within the EU?
Happy to be corrected though!

Euro 4 is Euro 4 in all EU member countries from that I can tell.

You're correct. No difference between Germany and the UK.

No it won't, they're only tested for smoke.

Is that all they did? £100 to change a single parameter seems like taking the piss to be honest.

His explanation of how it works is all wrong for a compression ignition engine anyway.

I bet they've also adjusted the MPG correction factor in the iDrive. You can adjust it up to 25%.

In summary, you've got a boggo smoker with pretensions of performance and are going to make it even more polluting because you are a tight wad.

How much fuel economy do some people want? I mean a 118d must do what, at least 50mpg?

OP what does the 'performance edition' consist of?

Is it styling add on's or an ECU tweak?

For a couple of hundred more you could have had a proper remap done surely?

Seems to be a poverty spec 118d ES with some M-Sport bits added. No performance differences, just a marketing ploy to sell coal burning stters.

I have wondered for a while if a lot of marques change the mapping of their diesels come first service so that they drive better. An emissions test cycle beating map for when it is first shipped which is then removed at the first service? It makes sense in my head, having seen the lengths which manufacturers go to to get thier diesels through emissions legislation.

I think roughly translated that means the block off the EGR valve.......... Which means a remap to prevent the MIL on the dash illuminating, which means you need to tell your insurers about the change.......

(PS, if your diesel is "sparking" it's probably broken ;-)
Priceless!

Would blocking the egr not increase fuel consumption slightly? In addition the engine would taking longer to warm up.
