I am just about to buy my soon to be 17 year old a car. I looked at loads of different cars and checked insurance and came to the following conclusions:

1. Nothing is cheaper than a Skoda fabia 1.2 for insurance. And its basically a VW under the shell
2. Insurers will ask you to pull down your pants and lube up if you choose a Saxo/Corsa/Fiesta or similar
3. VW's of any kind are almost double the cost to insure vs the Skoda equivalent
4. Some classics are cheap to insure e.g. Classic Mini
5. 'So when can I borrow the Jag/TVR dad' gives me a coughing fit - and then I hide the keys.

At 19 I had a Ford Ka. 60hp, little weight, good fun to drive once wound up, economical, and £1500 to insure for a year.

Bubble shaped Micra or Punto, both very reliable and both very cheap to insure.
If you're not paranoid about Big Brother look at one of the monitored insurance companies like iKube, my lad has just completed 2 years with them and is now down to £600 a year fully comp and the driving tracker has just been switched off. Started at £1700 which was half what we were quoted by the conventional insurers at the time.

I was in a similar situation, 20 years old, just passed car test, 3 years no claims on a bike license.

If he really doesn't care what he drives (like myself) i present to you, a Mk2/Mk3 Volkswagen Polo 1.3 - Cost me £950 to insure and i live in a high risk postcode apparently

£1700 quid a year for insurance, with interest thats over £140 quid a month, then there's the purchase price, maintenance, MOT etc.

It might be worth his while to look at some of the new car deals with free insurance such as below. It's a new Corsa for a small deposit, £159 per month and includes insurance

Triumph Dolomite. Not a Sprint, just a boring one. 1300 or 1500 I would guess.

Pick a car thats not likely to be driven by todays 17-20 year old - I had a MG ZR105 and paid £1200 at 19/20 - this was in 2008.

Best bet it to wait until you are 21 in all honesty, few of the lads i know who are younger drive defenders / disco's but they are farmers so probably get some sort of discount.

Also ensure you put both yourself and wife/gf/his mum on the insurance as i put my mum and dad on which reduced it by a few hundred pound, you will probably find comprehensive is cheaper than TPF&T too.

All policies are underwritten by Ageas Insurance Ltd. Other insurance specific terms and conditions apply.
^Drivers aged 18-20 will make a contribution of £99 to their premium and must agree to the fitting of a telematics box to the car: every 3 months your policy will be reviewed and if you drive well, we will return part of this to you. But he has only just passed test according to OP so this offer is a no go for him.

Get something boring but slightly different. At 21 I got a V70 and a mate got a 406, both of us paid about £800 for insurance fully comp with no years experience.

I'll just trot out my usual response to these threads, too. Toyota Yaris 1.0 VVTi. (Winter tyres are cheap for them) It's not a catch-all panacea for inexpensive insurance costs for young people, but it's a good start.
I would second this. My daughter's first year insurance was £1500 with a tracker box fitted. It dropped down to £600 in year 2.

cheapest insurance quotes my brother has been getting is for a fiat panda. can pick them up at a sensible price and theyre not a bad little motor.

some of the bigger bike insurance companies do a "6 wheel policy". may also be worth asking insurance wether they accept bike no claims, in my eyes ncd is ncd regardless.

I started a thread about "how do vaux afford this" a few weeks ago.

I still think you'll struggle to beat an utterly base spec panda; loads about, dead simple to work on, galvanised body, plenty of space, very low insurance group, cheap etc etc.
