So,

A friend of a friend has offered me a 1996 4-runner, 3.0 TD, Manual.

its in good nick, owned by her from new, bought and serviced (every 6,000 miles) at the Toyota dealership a few miles from her house. apparently regularly wax-oiled too.

asking £1300 which I believe is cheap, off to have a look at it on Saturday morning with a view to dragging the caravan around with it and using it for work as a stop gap until I buy something much newer next year when we head to France in the summer with the caravan.

my question is are they any good, I'm relatively familiar with the Surf, a friend had one. and I'm also fairly handy with the spanners having owned many a Land Rover over the years so I've got a vague idea what I'm looking at. I know they're rare so that's why I'm asking.

many thanks in advance guys!

Paul

I've had my surf for exactly a week now , it's a 1996 3.0 SSRG , to be honest with you , I haven't drove my car for a week , bloody loving the surf , feels awesome! The 4-runner sounds a good buy , the truck certainly puts a smile on my face !

Dads got a 1995 manual one. We paid a lot less but wouldn't discribe it as mint. We wanted something that can tow 3500kg (unsure if it can legally) but does well. And throw tools etc in it and not worry fits the bill. Decent truck nothing special.

Thought 4 Runner and Surf were the saame thing, just different names/specs for different markets.

Surf and 4runner same car!! except the surf was a higher spec grey import had Air con and other goodies that Toyota GB made you pay though the nose for!!! the grey imports really screwed the official importers who tended to bring in base models and sell them as premium ..

I was thinking of running mine on 50% straight veg oil when I next fill up , apparently these engines take to it pretty well , and it saves money too!

cheers for the replies fella's, all good news so far then. I'm aware they're basic old things but that's what I like in a vehicle to be honest. I shall report back with pictures etc assuming I make the purchase!
