You never use it. On the drive home from work most evenings I see a lovely dark blue '55 plate BMW M6 with the 5.0 V10 and every single time I see the guy (which is about 2, maybe 3x per week) he is sat on the motorway on a 55mph cruise.

It's not like sometimes he's doing 65-70, sometimes 55, it's literally 55mph every day. Surely he'd be better off with a 630i if he wants a 6er bmw with a smooth engine, or a 635d if he wants more economy....

Who knows, maybe off the motorway when he turns off he nails it to over 8000rpm biggrin

Either way, fair play for having the car, but it just seems a waste of a glorious engine.

This was my first thought smile Drive sedately on the motorway, then when you do give it some, it feels even better!

I do it sometimes, although my car isn't --quite-- as powerful!

I generally slip stream a lorry or something on the way to work. Sure it's probably a waste of engine but I'm Not in a rush, I get there chilled out and get a heap more mpg.

When it's home times, I drive more 'quickly' as I want dinner!

Buddy of mine has an F10 M5, very rarely gives it the boot. Just enjoys the car!

Most likely.

Whether it's 55mph or 85mph, if it's a cruise you're not really experiencing the engine any differently.

I often sit at 60 on dual carriageways in my 700bhp 5.0 v10.

Too easy to get busted on big roads wink

I sit at 70mph in my 6.0 V12.

What's your point?

I like having some power incase I need it. If I don't need it then I simply don't use it confused

Honestly, poor people start such strange threads rofl

To be fair to the guy too, that engine is awful for economy.

At 55 he's probably hoping to see 25mpg, tops. At 70 it would easily be sub 20.

At those levels I'd granny along too. Until the twisty bits.

Whatever car I drive sits at exactly 70mph cruise on the Motorway. Why go any faster? Motorway driving is dull at 50, it's dull at 70, it's expensive, dull and risky license wise at 90. So might as well kick back and chill.

Once off the Motorway? Thats when you can enjoy it. Don't blame the M6 guy - maybe he can justify the extravagance of the V10 by returning less-than-ridiculous MPG on his motorway commute?

Because he has nothing to prove to anybody, I rarely go above 70mph on the road; I save it for the track.

Sometimes you get there just as quick with the cruise on @ 55 in the 1st lane and you haven't got Jonny 118d "M Performance" 2ft from your bumper waiting to cause an accident. You can save the fuel for other roads wink

yes He's probably able to justify opening it up a bit on roads that are more fun if he cruises at a lower speed on boring motorways.
Not everyone is in such a hurry to get where they're going either.

Thanks for making me smile lads thumbup it takes me back to when I used to enjoy a high capacity engine...now I only have a 3.0 litre I can flog it around everywhere and never worry about mpg...the problem is now its just not worth flogging because its so bloody slow and not worth the effort anyway!

Enjoy having the power that you have both got. biggrin

I hit the cruise control when I get to 60 and watch the world go by. Average speed on the computer for a tank of fuel is always 43 mph. For the last tankfull I tried mixing it with the photocopier salesmen in the German Cars Lane to see what effect this had on fuel economy. This dropped from 57 Mpg to 49 unsurprisingly but my average speed for that tank went up to 44.

Wow, a whole 1 mph faster over 500 miles.

17 miles of my 20 mile (each way) commute is motorway and I finish work at 7pm, by which time the motorway is clear. The difference in economy is obviously still there, but I can make up a surprising amount of time if I'm getting hungry. More than 1mph average, that's for sure.

Not on mine though. Or the other people around me either. Driving to the conditions maybe.

He's right about the tailgaters too, their antics mean they're often doing 12 mph while us tortoises are sailing past on the left at 50. I passed the same builders van three times like this on the stretch of the M4 that runs through Newport this morning.

When you drive a "nice" car there's always some tw@t in a white van or a black Audi whose sole ambition in life is to drive right on your back bumper. Might as well chill and let them disappear in a cloud of their own diesel smoke. You're the one smiling!
